Back in the mid 1980s, we regualarly took P-3s out of Moffett on flights below the canyon rim. At the end of every the quarter, it was time to burn up OPTAR so as not to lose it next time. Canyon runs, airshows, cross-countries home, etc were a a given the last two weeks of each quarter and a must the last two weeks of the fiscal year. Burn it or lose it. We burned it.

Same-o, same-o ... 'u$e it or lo$e it' ... a flyby @ Rushmore that was reprinted & displayed all over the SouthWest at many BaseOps, both Navy & AF ... but the caption on the Skyhawk website is wrong. The flight was in 1977 (not '78 -- I KNOW as I was drivin' ship 402) ...

and the TRAWING-3 Commodore was in the lead ... dash -4 took the pix.

This 'fly by' was SOP for most tactical flights transiting the area ...

It was a time when the 'heavies' still had a sense of humor ...

Had some authorized "sandblowers" in that area (GC...Lake Mead) back in the day...more fun than a guy could ask for!! ;-)

Took a hydraulic cat shot loaded out with fuel...along with ~14 other birds...off the coast of CA...was enroute ("direct") to home base when the clock read 2359 hrs at the end of that fiscal year...have no idea who claimed the JP-4...but bet it was neither the boat...nor home base!!

BzB??
