Interestingly, even though he's a Hornet & "Rhino" driver as well... he elected (or was "voluntold") to go up as a Mission Specialist rather than a pilot astronaut.

Maybe he wanted to be a spacewalker rather than fly the orbiter? or get in on a shuttle flight before it gets shut down rather than not at all?...

NASA may have made the decision to not train him as a Shuttle pilot since they would probably only get one flight out of him before they retire the shuttle. Given the amount of time and resources they put into training a Shuttle pilot they probably thought it was not worth it.

P.S. He still looks like a Q.......:D

Well, NASA could have probably "tabled" him within NASA till the Constellation Program's Aries I / Orion came on line and train him as a pilot astronaut for that rather than send him up on a shuttle mission as an MS (unless they needed him or he wanted to be an MS / space-walker), but that's just a thought...

Wonder if from the get go whether he was picked as a Mission Specialist astronaut vs. Pilot Astronaut or whether it was a decision made after his selection to the Corps... (Astronaut Corps, that is, not Marine Corps :D)

What's a that? Q-tip? (I assume you're not referring to Dynamic Pressure :D...)

Nah, it's a nickname that cadets at The Citadel (and apparently grads too :D) have for the guys in Band Company.
LTCOL Bresnik is an '89 Band Company grad.

Anyone watching the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-129?

Yeah, I saw it...from 17000 feet in a T-6! My instructor and I were doing an INAV flight heading east to TLH (from NPA), the controller gets on Jax Center and says 'All aircraft who are interested, the Atlantis just launched out of Canaveral.'

IP and I immediately snap eyes off our right wing, and we start looking. About 30 seconds later, I see a long thin line of smoke shooting into the air, really fast and REALLY long. It was pretty much the coolest thing I've ever seen.

And sorry, I couldn't take a picture of it because cameras aren't allowed in the aircraft...but I totally would have. It looked a lot like coyote's picture...but with a bubble canopy instead. :icon_tong

I am not sure they have settled on how they are going to train the Orion crew, but why have an astronaut sit around for 10 years doing nothing (it happened in the 70's to quite a few) when you could use him as a mission specialist now? There is a method to the madness, it may not always make sense but there is one.

"Queers"?

Yeah, that's the short answer.

It is not helped by the fact they wear a tiny little harp on their shirt collars, that looks like a Q of course, showing they are in the band.

I'm sure I could make that into a "that's what she said" but I just don't care enough.
