This may have been mentioned earlier, but I’m curious: What is the legality in question here? I’m interested in any official FAA guidance on IFR pickups or filing in flight, if it even exists.

Under 3710 (unless it's changed in the last two years), Part 135, and I believe Part 121 (121-ers can correct me), use of a cellular device in-flight is not authorized. So you can't legally file with FF in the air since it requires an internet connection. If you have INMARSAT or some other connectivity in the aircraft, then I suppose it could be legal, depending on what your organization's SOPs are.
Executing an IFR pickup in flight is perfectly fine, but the expectation is that something is already filed (with the caveat of the military or emergent cases getting special handling, as previously discussed). That said, getting that pickup will be dependent on ATC workload. If they're too busy and tell you to stand by, you can't push your way to the head of the line (short of declaring the emergency, which is certainly an option). Sometimes even a MEDEVAC callsign won't help you.

F-4s had the same set up. I think it's a "Blown Flap". Either jet exhaust or engine bleed air is re-directed downward by the flap to increase low speed stability.

Yesterday there was a section of Romeos that appeared to be doing Section instrument approaches. Is this something formal now or just a new JO hotness to pass the time?
For the record, I'm not knocking JO hotness shenanigans. I always enjoyed creating and/or participating in such creative outlets in an effort to improve my aviation acumen.

The differences are all under the skin, mostly avionics, so not from a distance, no. When I worked for Grumman the SAMC plant at St Augustine did rework for the Adversary birds and the few Swiss jets then still flying, so I got to climb into a few. Elegantly dirt simple airplanes.
This pic was posted by the commander of a deployed carrier. No issues with the post or image, but is it typical for sailors on duty to wear something that will readily drown them…like ballistic plates? Do all crew members don vests when under attack?
They’re MAs - see their badges - and that’s what the MAs wear on duty. If it ever got so bad that the MAs are running around topside during GQ, the Boat’s pretty well fucked anyway.
