SWO/FO/Aviator hopeful

non-prior (Father and Grandfather were both LT CMDR)
3.53 GPA (International relations)

I submitted my application package last week out of NRD Philadelphia. I got 4 officer interviews; one from a USMC colonel, one from a current CMDR, who now teaches Surface Warfare in Newport, a LT and a LTJG. 3 rec letters, 2 from former co-workers, 1 from my martial arts teacher of 3 years. 3 employment reference forms filled out as well by my three most recent bosses.

So, the age-old question, because all of the info I have found outside of the forum seems a bit outdated; any thoughts on what my chances are? I want aviation and FO more than SWO, but I am excited about all three ( I also put down intel, but that board doesn't meet until October).

Thanks for all of the help.

Action is the foundational key to all success.
You are sitting prettier than me for SWO. I talked to my OR for the first time 3 weeks ago and he had me going to take the OAR test the next day (which I had never heard of the test before) and that was a huge mistake because I didn't get to study at all and only scored a 43 (Mechanics kicked my butt). :( So my stats are as followed:
OAR: 43
GPA: 3.2 B.S. in Liberal Arts
2 LOR's from O-4's, 1 from a CW2, 1 from an E9, and one employer
I was the captain of my high school basketball team and ran track (200m and 400m).
Tons of volunteer hours at my hometown's soup kitchen

Tiffany, I wouldn't sell yourself short. The ASTB does matter, but it is only one part. from what I have heard it's the entire package that counts. Your GPA is solid, AND you have LORs from 2 0-4s, that counts well. NONE of my LORs are from current officers/enlisted personnel. You've got leadership, and community service (which I have very little of for mine).

If you dont get in, just hit the next selection board even harder. Take the ASTB again if need be I was able to put together some pretty solid study guides from online stuff. PM me if you want the links.

We only get to take it three times (forms 3,4,5), so we ned to make every shot count.

Also if you take it again take the whole thing; who knows, you might score 8s and 9s on the flight portions and then have a whole different career path available.

But you might not need to take it again, because you might get in.

I guess all we can do is wait until August 1'st ish (thats when my OR says the 7/15 board should stat letting us know).

Did you put SWO first?

Submitted my package mid April for SWO

OAR 55
MS Industrial Engineering 3.11
4 LOR's from former employers I interned with
Tons of math credits which I heard is a plus to have
Amateur Boxing/MMA/Muay Thai
Speak 3 languages

Spoke to my OR about a week ago and he told me to be patient but hearing others getting pro rec after a week make me a little anxious. If anyone knows my chances please let me know. Some positivity can ease my mind right now.

HAHA.

Allow me to be clear, as a 25 year old I want to fly more. I also want to eventually get into command and hopefully 10-15 yeas from now command my won ship. It is for that reason that I put SWO first. Short term versus long term wants. If I get SWO I won't be unhappy with it, moreover I probably will be alot happier with it than I would be as an aviator.

Apologies, that was horribly explained on my pat, and I imagine that the selection board does not often see someone with a SWO designator as their first choice preceding Aviation.

for non AD applicants officer interviews carry not much weight at all, unless you have worked directly for them, the board has said over and over again that letters from employers who directly supervised you, and letters from professors that can talk about what you have done hold quite a bit of weight.

NavyOffRec,

Thank you for the insight. So in the event that I am not selected for this board, what would you recommend I do differently for the next board?

I would love to hear your insight, especially with your experience as an OR as to what you think competitive scores are. Thanks again.

In regards to your chance at anything aviation, I would say retaking the ASTB, as far as SWO, I would say you have a decent shot and I don't see anything that I would change.

I was worried about that but I have only worked at 1 place and got a letter from them. All of the other LOR's I got are from active Army and they are people I have known my entire life or I have done volunteer hours for. Hopefully only having the 1 previous employer LOR don't bite me in the butt!
