To me it makes sense either way. My oso told me to inform someone (not sure who yet) right away when I arrived to let them know I want to do an in-house contract switch. It makes sense to do it at the beginning because air contract slots and ground slots are in different companies during tbs, correct? So they would need to determine that before beginning your training at tbs? I just want to be clear and to be in the best position possible to compete for that air contract.

You have some bad information. Everyone trains together at TBS. You'll have air/ground/law and reserve guys in your company, platoon, and squad. Competitive air slots are divvied up at the same time the ground guys find out their MOS. Throwing your name in the hat for competitive air does not mean you won't be assigned a ground MOS. It only means that they can assign you a Pilot or NFO slot if you meet the minimum requirements for those slots. Just because you meet the requirements and a slot may be available doesn't mean you'll get it.


Also- acronyms are capitalized. OSO, TBS, ASTB, and so forth.

I'd sit down and talk to your OSO. We do all train together. A whole company of Air guys? I don't think so. Just do your best at TBS and study your balls off for the ASTB. But even if you are ground, there are other cool Air jobs. For instance: Air Intel, Air Maintenance, Logistics (in the Wing). Some of these jobs include very cool Schools like:
