EXCELLENT observations. And these have ALWAYS been the point of my posts knocking tats for those who have read the posts and think I'm full of shit. Note: I have always like and admired tattoos on senior PO's and NCO's ... different world in many cases.
So what's more important? You career as a Naval Officer or tattoos?? Hmmmmm .... ??? Get with it, people. You ain't in a rock band, you're a Naval Officer ... or mebbe you want to be.

Thunder do your thing bud, this is an opinionated subject with both angles being shared. There really is not a right or wrong answer when you come down to it. Yes I understand the logic behind not having one but it seems as if there are plenty of Officers who do....... Good Luck!

Experience speaks louder than opinion or wishful thinking and experience sez there ARE "issues". If YOUR experience is different: bully for you.
Look: if you want 'em -- get 'em. I could care less. But don't tell guys they're "not an issue", 'cause I have experienced the opposite. Others on this thread have as well. Tattoo's are a symbol of "rebellion" and "in your face" outlaw-ism and therefore not acceptable to many.

It's real simple A4's, I've had one of mine for 13 of my 15 years in the Navy. The other is 2 years old. No issues means just that, no issues and I know it. Nobody gives a shit, through my flight physicals, swim quals, working out in the gym on the boat or at home, etc. It isn't a big deal, plain and simple. This comes from experience. I could see somebody complaining if in your whites there was a snake coming up your neck. I'm assuming of course since I have never seen that. Off the top of my head, 2 or 3 of us pilots at my last squadron had tattoo's as well.....none could be seen in uniform though. Of course I don't know the rules about coming in with them either. I didn't have mine when I came in.
People are asking the basic question and I'm giving them an answer from someone who has tatoo's. Thats my experience, not wishful thanking, or opinion. Being I have them, I have a bit more experience with the issue than you. This isn't 1960 anymore.
It is starting to seem to me that some folks here have a personal issue with tattoo's, be it for themselves, officers, aviators, whatever. To each their own. All I know is I have them and they have never been an issue. I dare to say they never will as well. It isn't about rebellion or other opinionated bullshit, some people like tattoo's just because. I'm telling folks how it is now, not 30 years ago.
Um...huh? What ever happened to personal expression? If someone has a tattoo in an area not visible in uniform, what does it matter? If some people PERCEIVE an inoffensive, harmless tattoo that way, then so be it. Perception may be reality often times, but if the tattoo isn't offensive or overbearing, then its that person's problem.
I don't have a tattoo, but I have thought about getting one. Certainly not because I am trying to "rebel" or be "in your face". I am in enough people's faces on AW.....

You mentioned your girlfriend so I thought I'd give a spouse's point of view. I have 2 tattoos on my back, one is visible and fairly large. I'm also thinking about getting a 3rd in the next couple years that would be partially visible.
I haven't had any problems with mine, and when I did wear an evening gown where you could see the whole thing I had people coming up being curious and asking about it (from O-1 to O-5).
I think bunk is partially right in the sense that tattoos are becoming so mainstream now that most people don't give them a second thought. But
A4s has a point as well that there are still people who you'll work under that will view it negatively. And there's a history of the "clean cut" officer, and unfortunitely people make judgements based on the first impression.
I'd wait to get it, just my $0.02.
