Temp. NPQ - Signing NFO Contract?

I'm looking for some feedback. Everything sounded legitimate, but a quick search couldn't find anyone else in my situation. Here goes:

' Got the call from the recruiter today, he needed me to sign the forms for the JPAS (background investigation). While I was down there, he told me my MEDDOCS were passed, but I was a TNPQ (temp. NPQ) because of a fiasco I had at MEPS. Basically they didn't administer the test as it should have been, and they failed me on depth perception - the next day I went to a civilian doctor and passed all of the DP tests, and submitted those results along with my MEDDOCS.

So what happens from here - my recruiter is faxing my info for the JPAS, and hopefully that information is matched seamlessly with my fingerprint card. Apparently they've been having some screw-ups with peoples information being lost in limbo or paired with the wrong prints. If everything works out well, I should have final select and a date within the next few weeks.

Recruiter says at that point I'll have to sign an NFO contract, and wait until I PQ down in P'cola after OCS.

Just making sure I don't have anything to worry about, and can be re-designated SNA when the time comes. Thanks for everything. :D

A contract is a contract. Sign it with the intent of becoming an NFO and if you get it changed to pilot, cool, otherwise, do not sign something you are going to have regrets doing. I started out as a pilot, busted my eye exam, and went NFO without any regrets.

I'm assuming you applied for NFO and not NA.

Pro-rec'd SNA, NFO, SWO - all three. 1st choice is SNA, my life won't be over if I get NFO, but my vision is near perfect and I KNOW I have depth perception.

Sorry for the confusion, should have said I was pro-rec'd SNA first.

If you're Pro-Rec'd SNA, I'd wait to sign a contract that says SNA. You sign a contract for NFO, you'll probably find yourself in the back of a P-3...

I knew that thing would come back and bite me. Just makes you think how many guys had their dreams crushed because some MEPS E-2 didn't put the card into the eye-test machine, and didn't know that it was done wrong.

So if I submitted a civilian doctor's report showing near perfect vision, full depth perception/color, etc. - and that wasn't enough, then how can I demonstrate that I have no eye problems in order to have my contract changed back to SNA?

When I applied for OCS I put SNA 1st and NFO 2nd. My recruiter really was pushing for me to go NFO, I got pro rec'd for it but never was told yes or no for pilot so I took the FO spot, went through OCS, when I got to A-pool got called into the CO's office one day and got asked if I wanted to be a pilot instead, now I'm in kingsville for T-45's. This was in the massive Pilot shortage of 07 where an bunch of folks got switched. Looking back I wish I would have waited to find out if I got pro-rec'd for pilot, but I wasn't gonna give up a back seat in a hornet if I couldn't get in the front seat either.

Why not go back to MEPS and redo the exam? Get the TNPQ taken care of at the source and get your SNA slot. I have a few friends who switched from SNFO to SNA, but it wasn't the easiest of things to do.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. He just made it seem like this was protocol, and I had nothing to worry about as far as SNA. I'll e-mail him tonight and ask if there's anyway I can go to MEPS again (hopefully just for the eye exam - is that possible?). Thanks nugget, and everyone else.

Just grow a beard and nobody will notice... be sure to use the black 'just for men' beard color dye just to be sure.

I failed my depth perception test at MEPS, went to a civilian, passed their test, got a letter and everything was good to go. If you know you have depth perception, then I think the likelihood of you getting NPQ'ed is close to 0. NAMI does not NPQ people for failing tests, only if they are medically incapable of flying.

If you want to go SNA, do not sign a contract for SNFO. The whole go SNFO and then apply to redesignate is an incredibly difficult process (I would go ahead and say that your chances are horrible). You have the power now, so keep it. There is nothing wrong with going SNFO except when your number one goal is SNA. For your case only take SNFO once you have the NPQ paperwork in hand. The whole TNPQ term is a load of crap because the possibility of being NPQ'ed and being NPQ'ed are two very different terms.

Do not let yourself get down about this issue. PM me if you have any questions about the issue. I failed my first depth perception test at MEPS, but have since passed it three times. My MEPS machine must have been bad because the later times I had no problem whatsoever.

JT, I had a similar situation to Tom's. I failed the depth perception at MEPS 2 weeks ago. My civilian eye exam from September07 was good enough to get things straightened out. My final select letter s/b coming this week (per recruiter).

I swear that machine had NO circles closer than any others...NONE!

Good luck to you and press to get it straightened out now like everyone suggests versus later.

See that bothers me because I submitted the civilian doctor's stuff with my original application 2 months ago. I'm going to call the recruiter and ask about it all.
