Temp. NPQ - Signing NFO Contract?

For what its worth there were at least a half dozen SNFO's in my OCS class that were actively trying to switch over to pilot (all with the eyes to do it) and none of them were successful. I have a feeling that some of the guys on here that were asked if they wanted to switch were given that ability because of timing. If you think you have the eyes and SNA is what you want, don't sign for SNFO. It seems that in your case, pushing forward for SNA is not going to jeopardize your acceptance for SNFO at this point. That being said, a bird in the hand...

There were also guys that passed the eye exams at MEPS (some because of the ineptitude of the administrators you describe) that were NPQ'ed at OCS or later. Keep in mind that the tests that you were given are the same eye tests that will be administered at OCS and NASP. So if you legitimately can't pass them now, it could come back to haunt you later. Good luck getting things sorted out.

I was in the same boat a few years back. Recruiter gives me the whole you’ve been selected for NFO and I told him no thanks. I re-submitted my paper work with the civilian exam results and waited the couple of months. I wouldn’t sign something unless you don’t mind doing that for your career. I definitely wouldn’t trust changing over once you get to Pensacola.

I personally know of 2 guys, one in my OCS class and one in the class before mine, who switched to Pilot at API. Not to mention one of the Officers I got a recommendation from for my application. Just being devil's advocate and all... :D

Yeah but the timing of your friends and mine was that the Navy was offering the switch for SNFO's to Pilot. Xmid was in API more recently than we were and has more up to date info than we do ;)

Change I can belive in
Me and my friends that joined from St. Louis all had the same problem at MEPS. No depth perception. We all went to civilian docs who told us that, yes indeed we did have depth perception. Go figure.

We didnt have to sign NFO contracts though; since the civilian one was good they just threw the MEPS one out in all our packages.

If you really want pilot it might be worth it to wait till thats cleared up.

Pro-Rec SNA with BDCP
See that bothers me because I submitted the civilian doctor's stuff with my original application 2 months ago. I'm going to call the recruiter and ask about it all.

Don’t sign up as an NFO; you want to be a pilot right?

I also had some paper work lost at MEPS. I learned my lesson; I will never do any sort of medical screening with the navy without bringing extra copies of paper work.

That reminds me. I had a letter from my civilian doctor saying my depth perception was good to go sent to MEPS so I could apply for BDCP. I had two copies of that during OCS; one in my war locker and one in my trunk. If anything were to come up I could pull it out to show it was a previous issue that was addressed. Think of it as a little ammo.

This is a lesson with Navy documents. The second you really need something it is going to be missing. Save and copy everything! Everything means medical stuff, leases, orders, certificates, travel paperwork, etc.

Just an update:

I sent my recruiter an e-mail expressing my concern. He's going to contact someone at "OOM" to find out why the civilian doc. paperwork did not suffice.

What is OOM?

Good idea. Perhaps the letter your doc sent was not properly written or maybe did not include the right information. Good luck.

Update 2.0:

I just heard back from my recruiter. He contacted someone and heard back that my civilian doc. depth perception statement would suffice, and my contract will now say SNA! I'm so excited, and waiting for that final select.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

When I applied for OCS I put SNA 1st and NFO 2nd. , when I got to A-pool got called into the CO's office one day and got asked if I wanted to be a pilot instead, now I'm in kingsville for T-45's. This was in the massive Pilot shortage of 07 where an bunch of folks got switched.

I got rolled up in that too, fourth best day of my life! From the senior O's I talked to, that doesn't happen that often and the change is actually pretty hard to make.

Awesome job getting an SNA contract. Have fun in OCS. (Freeze, Candidate, Freeze!)

I do believe we were in the same API class, at least from your avatar you look like a guy who was in mine.

Read, heed and help those that follow you because everyone is clueless in the beginning (this applies to more than just AW).
