The basics of API

About the Marine physical fitness question. We have to do a regular Marine PFT before API for MATSG. Then you have to do the Navy PRT thing during API, if you pass the PFT do not stress the PRT. It was by far the easiest thing we did in API. As for the studying, I had basically no collegiate level science/math background and I studied a fair amount during API but none ahead of time and did fine. Admittedly if I had been a Navy SNA, I would have been on the fence but I think they had to have something like a 96 average when I went through. I think it's a little ridiculous to have a minimum standard if you have to achieve far above it to make a cut.

So what is the current standard for Marines? I remember reading somewhere that everyone must score a min of 80. I didn't quite understand what you meant by being on the fence. Were you saying that if you had been in their shoes, you would have been on the fence as in being shown the door if your average was below 96?

Do us AF studs go in the water at all? And if so, are we issued flotation devices or water wingys?

Peace,

As I recall, their Nav/WSO/second class citizens are required to 'attempt' the mile swim, but are not required to complete it...

I remember the flight physical b4 my 1st class cruise. They made us blow and inflate our flotation devices attached to the sv-2. Do we do the same thing in api?

I really sucked on the treading w/full flight gear during the flight physical. Since there isnt really any way to practice it before api, any words of wisdom from those who have gone through it? I can tread no prob in just my bathing suit. But as soon as i wear the sv2, i sink :(

yeah, calm down and try to relax. make larger arm and leg movements at a slower speed then you would make if you were just in a bathing-suit.

^What he said. Also, I found it helpful to keep your lungs as full as you can. When you're not wearing the helmet, lean your head back a bit to force your chest up (helps utilize the buoyancy of your lungs).

When you've got the helmet on, lower your head into the water "vertically" The helmet will trap some air and will support a good portion of your weight.

Finally, pay attention to the videos and instruction, and LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTORS. They are not there to weed you out - they are there to train you and get you up to USN standards. They will bust their butts to get you where you need to be. API swimming shouldn't be anything to worry about - it should be a nice break from the stuffy classroom.

The Navy and AF don't use the same gear? I always though it would be pretty much the same... Except maybe flotation...

How bought after API? Any word on how long it is taking AF studs to start VT-3?

BTW...just curious...Where do AF studs go for life support gear, in particular helmets. Are we issued Navy helmets and then have to return them upon completion of Primary?

Peace,

THRILLER

You'll go visit the gear Nazis in Pensacola- they will give you your stuff.

Thriller in Primary at Whiting you use all Navy gear, as of right now. They are in the process of going to a new flight vest that is actually assigned to each student so that may be changing. But it looked like they were all the same so I'm pretty sure AF bubbas are still using the same gear as the Navy and Marines. The helmets are the same as ours and you'll have to hand them in at the end of Primary. All helo guys have to turn in our helmets after primary for sure and I'm pretty sure it's the same for fixed wing guys, but I could be wrong on that. But being that you are Air Force and you will probably end up withsome sort of airconditioned heads up display, multi-million dollar thing on your head, I would put money on you turning in your helmet after Primary.

Bubba, you're kidding right? The Air force wouldn't be caught dead in the Navy/Marine Corps low end gear (except dueing training) afterall they have standards to uphold.

Good stuff BigFish,

I appreciate the info bro. On the subject of our helmet, do we get an O2 mask or just basically a white cranium cover with a mic?
