The basics of API

zoomie08

Fast, Neat, Average...
A few older officers that went through API back in the day keep telling my fellow ENS friends and I that the PT at API is killer (5 mile runs on the beach, mile+ swims through the bay, 10k xc time trial, etc). Is it really that bad? I am in pretty good shape and usually run the PRT run in 9:45 or so, 70 or so pushups, 100+ situps. Should I be worried or are they just messing with me?

You shold be really worried. I mean everyone in my class had to run sub 6:00 miles with 40lbs backpacks barefoot on the beach. Pushups must be maxed out and situps minimum is 150. That's actually just to start the program, I'm sure someone has info on the last PT test but I have since blocked it out of my memory.

Wow, I'm going to start saying that to new guys.

Hmmm....week 1: practice for the mile swim almost every day. It consisted of probably <500 yds of total swimming. Week 2: more practice, maybe even the mile?? Week 3: PT with some of the PR instructors....I think we played some volleyball on, gasp, the gym floor. I know for a fact there was no PT the last 2 weeks.

API is all academic.

But don't fail the indoc PRT....you will got rolled out of your class.

The indoc PRT is as hard as it gets. You may want to go run the chip trail course. It will slow you down quite a bit (either that or all the beer you've drank while sitting around to class up for API).

I know it's been said before but the swimming isn't very hard for anyone except the most hydrophobic.

Most of the other PT sessions we had were either a do your own sort of thing or playing volleyball.

Lol.....wow that is some seriously bad gouge. Maybe it was like that 10 years ago, but not even close now. You will be fine w/ your PT scores, just make sure you don't forget to work out here and there during A-pool. We went to the New Orleans Jazz Festival the night before the big scary :) API PRT, and it was no big deal......chip trail is nothing to be afraid of.

The meatball sub is easily 3 meals ... I dont know how that guy can turn a profit, I could not buy that much beef at the store for that price. Great place. Great family running it too.

I'd forgotten about Hip Pocket Deli. Good memories.

I'd eaten there all of 3 times during API and VT-10. I then left for 9 months to head down to Randolph AFB for maritime NFO training. Came back for the basic EW school at Corry...walked into the Hip Pocket in civvies a couple of week later...and the owner looks up at me and says without hesitation: "Heyyy...Mr. Mike...the usual...Philly Cheese no onions?"

Can anyone tell me the drop out rate in flight training? I talked to a guy who went through it in the 90's and he said it was 50%.

The attrition rate in flight school is not 50%. The attrition rate is different between Primary and then whatever advanced pipeline you follow on to. Some people attrite in API.....

100% if you really suck or are medically jacked up.
0% if neither of the above apply

It's about 97% for people who are curious about the attrition rates before they even get there...

Seriously. If that thought even enters your mind where you're curious what the chances are if you DON'T make it... you've already entertained that avenue. I've never seen/thought about myself not making it. Thus, despite "bumps" along the way, I'm still here.
