The Eyes have it - All things Vision-related

I didn't realize that you had already had your bloodwork done. Most have their B/W done as part of the Flight Physical. If you are not 20/20, then they will probably dialate your eyes, to verify you actual "un-strained" eyesight. Bring your glasses just in case ...Good luck!

Without going into the details of the new wavier let me make clear that there has been no change to the vision requirements for pilot. There are no new waiver provisions.

The change detailed in the NAMI website is for commssioned officers looking to redesignate to 131X, and to a lesser extent current 131Xs with failing vision. No civilian, or Midshipman, will get orders to pilot training with less than 20/40 vision. This is straight from the NAMI opthamologist. Best gouge available.

If this is the case, NAMI should probably write the policy more clearly. The policy only speaks of the waiver applying to SNA applicants, and makes no distinction between officers redesignating and new accessions.

It is not ambiguous at all if you are a Flight Surgeon looking for guidance on a waiver for a member of the Navy sitting before you. If you are a recruiter, or a recruit for that matter, you look to the Navy Recruiting Command for guidance on eligibility for a program. NAMI does not set the standard for accessions into the Navy from OCS. They couldn't care less if it is clear to wannabes surfing the net. Anyone in the loop that is confused knows how to get a clear reading on the policy. So, for the benefit of all on Air Warriors, I did. It is as posted above.

Are you sh!tting me? I had my 5 year physical last year and thought I was friggin going blind. Have had 20/20 for as long as I can remember, but not that day. Never occured to me that hydration would be a factor.

Hello, I am new but have a related question. Can someone point me to where vision requirements for entry into flight school are located. My daughter is very interested in Naval flight training but has about 20/40 in both eyes. I know there are many requirements and wonder if there is one place to see them written down? Thanks for the help.

For pilot it is 20/40 uncorrected with good color and depth perception. The Navy will consider wiavers if corrected via PRK surgery. That is a very specific procedure, no other eye surgery is permitted. There is lots of info on this site about PRK.

For Naval Flight Officer eye sight can be quite a bit worse as long as it corrects to 20/20.
 
Thread resurrect... the link states that...

"SNA APPLICANTS: SNA applicants with excessive refractive error and disqualifying uncorrected distant visual acuity (UCDVA), no worse than 20/400, who demonstrate successful fit and habitual wear (at least six months) of approved soft contact lenses and meet all other visual standards can apply for a waiver. Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) should be measured by the Armed Forces Vision Tester (AFVT), Optec 2300, B-VAT, or similar charts with multiple 20/400 letter capabilities. Using the Snellen 20/200 "E" is not an acceptable method of assessing uncorrected visual acuity of 20/400. A history of successful contact lens wear does not guarantee the granting of waiver. "


The way I read that (I did good on the english comprehension section of the ASTB :icon_tong ), I can go to MEPS/NAMI/Wherever and, being a Soft Lens wearer of about 4 years, get a waiver. That seems too easy. No way would they let me be fly with 20/350 and contact lenses in, would they? Or is this in regards to PRK waivers?
