They broke off a lot when tanking from "hard-hosed/hard-basket" KC-135 tankers. Just too much of a routine FOD-hazard to worry about. I think the Iranians still leave them off. Same reason.
The Iron Maiden strikes again.......get a nice curl. I guess the Hornet drivers figured it out after hours of practice.

Not my shot, I just took it from the BHR's Facebook page to share as a cool picture. Just some real nice work by the MCs.
