A lot of guys had the shit scarred out of them when they transitioned from the F-4 to F-14.

The F-4 cat shot was straight forward, honest, and no funny business. You saluted, and off you went.... The F-14 was different. You saluted, and instead of "off you go" there was a 'jerk', then a hesitation, and only then - which seemed like an eternity....
Bridles & ol' school VS nose-tow links and Grumman, you miserable, miserable, miserable, miserable, miserable, miserable .... Fighter Puke ... :D

I Love you too crazy, Sailor-man ... (think CUBI circa '72) ...

Rock on ... :D

You wanted a stiff strut for take off so as when the shuttle took off it (the aircraft) didn't have a nose strut compressing or extendning during the stroke. Atleast thats what I remember from my FRAMP classes back in 1985.

I also have a few videos I'd like to post that were made by friends of mine. Am I allowed to do that and how?

The second picture shows where a lost flashlight wound up after being lost by one of the newer guys. That's the rear left seat. He didn't notice it missing from his vest after the flight but luckily one of the Marines in flight equipment did. Those vertical rods are connected to the flight controls and you can actually reach behind the seat in flight and move the plane around a bit.

What's the reason for the kneel? I've seen it in pics and films, but never figured out why they do it prior to the cat shot. Is it common to all tailhook aircraft or just the tomcat?

As it was explained to me:
"so it could do a curtsey to the crowd after a sick airshow demo"

I like that one, Not sure if maybe it has to do with aero on the launch but i do know that is how the launch bar is lowered. Its attached to a linkage on the nose strut.

Here's one of my dad's ship USS Wasp CVS-18 launching an S-2...Maybe someone can tell me what the structure I circled is? I've noticed alot of Essex class ships seemed to have them at one point but I can't find any reference as to what they are...
