The article is in the April issue of Mens Health, page 42 for any interested.
"The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research published a study of 11 collegiate distance runners who ran three 5-K trials at different paces in the first mile: their average mile pace, 3 percent faster than average, or 6 percent faster. The fastest early pace resulted in the finish times that were 32 seconds quicker than the finish times from the average-pace starts. Slower starters ran faster final miles, but never made up for time lost at the start."
You may have heard this before, but go with what works for you.
I've been using the "pose technique" for running that's been discussed on here before. If you haven't tried it, it's worth a shot. Basically, the idea is that you run on the balls of your feet only because landing on your heals acts like a braking action.
Please. Resist the urge. No need to turn Air Warriors ... (Get it??? "Air Warriors" ??? ) ... into a kiddie porn site......I'll have to send a clip of my daughters toes and legs.
If anything it will make your calves bigger. My 5yr walks on nothing but her tiptoes and she gets compliments from her leg muscles all the time. The thing is I was told by a doctor we have to start getting her to walk on her heels as well because too much stress on the balls of your feet stretches that band and can cause more foot problems in the future. So running on the balls of your feet.."pose technique" might not benefit you later on. I'll have to send a clip of my daughters toes and legs.

Curious, when she was learning how to walk, did you hold her up by her hands over her head and lead her along? From what I understand that can be a contributing factor.
I've been using the "poser technique"
In Africa when the lion wakes it must run in order to catch the gazelle, if it does not, it starves. When the gazelle wakes it must run in order to survive, if it does not, it is slain. Either way when you wake, you run, and when you run, you run fast.
