The heat and humidity at OCS

The article is in the April issue of Mens Health, page 42 for any interested.

"The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research published a study of 11 collegiate distance runners who ran three 5-K trials at different paces in the first mile: their average mile pace, 3 percent faster than average, or 6 percent faster. The fastest early pace resulted in the finish times that were 32 seconds quicker than the finish times from the average-pace starts. Slower starters ran faster final miles, but never made up for time lost at the start."

I subscribe to Men's Health, but to me a lot of their "studies" are inconclusive. For example, this study has a sample size of 11. I would think they need to study more runners to get an accurate result.

You may have heard this before, but go with what works for you.

I've been using the "pose technique" for running that's been discussed on here before. If you haven't tried it, it's worth a shot. Basically, the idea is that you run on the balls of your feet only because landing on your heals acts like a braking action.

Meh, I'll give that a shot next time.

If anything it will make your calves bigger. My 5yr walks on nothing but her tiptoes and she gets compliments from her leg muscles all the time. The thing is I was told by a doctor we have to start getting her to walk on her heels as well because too much stress on the balls of your feet stretches that band and can cause more foot problems in the future. So running on the balls of your feet.."pose technique" might not benefit you later on. I'll have to send a clip of my daughters toes and legs.

Indeed. More than a little bizarre.

Curious, when she was learning how to walk, did you hold her up by her hands over her head and lead her along? From what I understand that can be a contributing factor.

I didn't do anything different then her sister...But, yes we did hold her up by her hands over her head. I walk on my toes too (so hereditary?)- and I have tons of arch problems...but she walks down stairs on the tips of her toes. She can even jump up and down on them...it is kind of freaky. lmao. She's very good at ballet to say the least.

And I'm spent

Edit: Just saw Mustang Wife's quote of "When a wife has a good husband, it is easily seen in her face." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Much can be said the other way around, "when a husbad has a good wife, it's easily seen in her face." Man I crack myself up.

Prefontaine, now that was a guy who ran through the fatigue and the pain...

In Africa when the lion wakes it must run in order to catch the gazelle, if it does not, it starves. When the gazelle wakes it must run in order to survive, if it does not, it is slain. Either way when you wake, you run, and when you run, you run fast.

That's a really good point.....tomorrow morning on my daily gazelle hunt I think I'll try and put a little more zing into my stride....:icon_tong

I may be mistaken, but I also think GySgt Hartman (R. Lee Ermy) made his shoes in a waffle iron. Gave him a little extra pep in his step, not to mention they tasted delicious!!!
