The Neverending Callsign thread (Best/Worst/Funniest and where they came from)

lol, I am just curious if there is any rules to the call signs. Also, does your call sign get placed on your aircarft with your name?

Im sure if your name is boring then you will do something dumb or have some physical defect your squadron will find entertaining.

Picking one's own call sign is considered a foul. I heard of a story of one guy wanting to be called "Iceman" and he got named "Slushee" instead.

This guy didn't ask to be called Iceman, he just had the 80's haircut, and he was called Slushee because he wasn't cool enough to keep his Iceman call sign.
 
During the old days in Naval aviation, the call signs were given my other pilots or flight personnel. You did not pick your own call sign. During my flight training flight at P. Town, summer 1949, the mosquitoes were so bad, we were swatting all the time. Some of the other trainee's started calling me "Skeeter". And that became my call sign.
I had a another call sign during the first tour in Korea 1951. "Chop-Chop".
One morning, rushing to finish breakfast, and fight quarters was called. I came into the ready room with my mouth full, and the squadron commander ask why I was chopping so much. The other pilots said, there is "Chop-Chop".

Generally, the call sign was something one had done.

In my 12+ years of flying, I have had a couple, but only "MASTER" really seems to stick. Since my last name is Bates, you do the math.

I was temporarily tagged "TREE" for "landing" a Bell 204 in one.

"MOD" was a version of Master, as in "Master of Disaster" after having a 2nd real auto in as many months.

Right now I'm 2 for 3 for the helo being flyable after real autos.

thats true most of the time but sometimes you like it...My brother has an internal tremor and it looks like he's always had about a hottle of coffee, and so he got the callsign "shakes" but that had been his knickname since he was at the acadamy(it was actually part of his DJ monicer)...so though it does not happen very often...if its that obvious it may stick whether he likes it or not.
 
For example, since this topic has been discussed many times yet you created another thread about said topic, I'm inclined to refer to you as A$$ Jockey. That's an example of how one might just earn a callsign.

Skeeterman - impressive resume. Question - what did you do between 1957 and 1964?

He was Iceman in TRACOM and those never stick. For that matter, neither do RAG ones (unless they're really hysterical). His new one is quite amusing.

Anigav is always a good option.
