It's the latest thing big navy is pushing, I edit that bit out if I'm not too tired to remember to do it. Sorry I slipped, I'll try to do better! ;)

Oh, no problem. Just wondering if I was missing something.

BTW, I'm glad to see that the MCs (and their releasing authorities) are finally correctly identifying the aircraft in their photos at least 42% of the time.

Great airplane...great community...great pilots and NFOs. Glad to have called many of you "CAG Bros" in times gone by.

Suspect that they could drop the radiation symbol on the nose, um maybe 15 years ago but I guess there's something to say about tradition.

It was a recce feature to distinguish it from an A-6. Now it's just done because it looks cool. It has nothing to do with a radiation hazard.

I suspect it was used by LSOs (during the day) as one final check to ensure the arresting gear was set for an EA-6B vice and A-6. Whether or not that was the intended purpose or not.... Who knows.

Yep - but even in 89 when I joined the fleet most squadrons had given it up. Likely was a useful marking back in the day when Prowlers were in sort supply and not every airwing had their own and the gear setting mix up could happen with an unusual player in the pattern.

Out of curiosity, what were the other airwings using? EA-3's?

Nothing for EA. The Whales in the fleet at that time were all VQ assets and if you needed Prowlers they were deployed from Whidbey. The newest squadrons back from cruise were on the bubble to redeploy. It didn't happen much but during Eldorado Canyon Coral Sea had no Prowlers and VAQ-135 did a 48 hour notice departure to the Med to support the strikes.
