Originally I was told by my OSO that the USMC would give me a pre-screening to determine which surgery (PRK/LASEK) to get and stuff, but today he said he talked to the docs and I should go for it on my own. I'll be getting on it ASAP. In order to have the surgery courtesy of Uncle Sam I'd have to get selected and get the contact waiver. I was going to have vision correction anyway, originally going to be LASIK, which I canceled for obvious reasons, so I'm gonna go for it. I'll probably get it in May.

I'm home on Christmas break, and I just called the eye center. They even thought about getting me in before I went back to school, but since there could be blurred vision for up to 6 weeks after surgery they decided against it. Looks like I'll be waiting till May.

Yeah... good call. Trying to do school work in the first 6-8 weeks after PRK is a b**ch and a half. Especially as a Comp Sci guy where Iwas spending most of my study time in front a a computer... and oh by the way, I couldn't really focus and I was light sensitive... sucked.

My eyes sucked. My eyes were lasered. My eyes are good. I passed Physical. I am happy.

20/625 each eye => 20/20 each eye.

I had PRK in May and couldn't be happier. I had worn contacts since '92 and my vision was 20/400 (20/20 corrected) with mild astigmatism. Now I am at 20/15. There was some excruciating pain involved with my left eye, but only on day 3 and 4 after surgery. As far as night vision, low contrast, and harsh conditions go, I have no problems and actually see better. I never dealt with halo effect after the first month, clarity seems much better, and my eyes dont tire out as quickly as they did with lenses. And it is not for a lack of trying. I have been working long days and nights in Iraq using NVGs, spotting scopes, rifle scopes, driving, etc. Basically working the s@#* out of my eyes and have no complaints other than occasional dryness. Nothing Bausch & Lomb can't fix. I can't make up your mind for you, but I would do it all over again in a hart beat. I didn't have to pay for mine because I had it done at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune. But I would have no second thought about coughing up the cash for it.

NFOKP. Did you get PRK after or before you got selected? Core or a specific spot? I am debating whether I should get it now or if after I get selected if thats possible? I am 20/400 also.

Get it as soon as you can. All you have to do is state that you had the surgery in your personal statement for STA-21 (that is how you ask for the waiver). I just found out today that I will be required to submit an annual eye exam to NOMI. They want to monitor my eyesight until I get commissioned.
