Callsigns originate from either a specific character trait or from something you've messed up. Some of the callsigns I know of:

Shrek (He had a BIG Head)
Butter (Play on his las name)
Fish (F*ck Is She Huge; she was a VERY tall woman)
Freddie (Looked like Freddie Mercury from Queen)
Fudge (His last name was Packer)
Box (Last name was hilliker...like "He'll lick her")
Rudolph (Left the lights on after a night trap)
Skippy (Rode a bicycle and looked like Skippy from Family Ties)
Finch (the Ready room JO's just decided that the next guy to check in was to be known as Finch - from American Pie...but commonly referred to as Sh!t Brick)
Sex (his last name was Fravor)
Spanky (Got caught)
Crunch (fender bender on the flight deck)
Sock (Last name was Cruz)
Mutt (didn't like being called Guido)
Mongo (Broke something in the airplane)
Cookie (Ralphed in the aircraft)
IKE ("I Know Everything")

The list goes on...and yes you will probably not like your callsign....I hated mine...but have come to accept it.
The only "cool" callsigns I saw were in the Air Force.....a whole bunch of F-16 Viper guys.....Seemed that they all named themsevles these cool callsigns....Losers.
Any other callsigns people have heard of?

Hey ea6bflyr... any chance that Spanky is a SH-60 pilot... I know of a guy with that name.

Shocka - because a girl gave him the shocker
Cooter - Because he went on a XC to his home state of TX so his dad could give him hubcaps
Quimby - his dad was mayor of Pasedena
Wheels - his last name is Reeves (we're all going to hell for that one)
Puddles - pissed the bed in Australia
Chubs - if you saw the guy, you'd know why

Those are some of the decent ones, we have a bunch of cheesy ones too like "Smitty" because the guy's last name is Smith. They weren't even trying on that one.

Any chance of you guys sharing your own callsigns?

Yeah, I understand, why tell people a nickname you hate.

Now if you got a callsign you didn't like, couldn't you just be like "YEAH! I like it! I am going to go call my mom and tell her I have a great callsign!" and it would then not be used?

What's with the elaborately decorated helmets? Is that for real, or another Hollywood addition?

I just can't see a group of aviators sitting in the ready room of a carrier with a box of stickers and acrylic paint trying to make their helmets look pretty.

You're right about the helmets. In our squadron, they're pretty much all the same, white with the squadron logo on the back. However, some have funny additions, like a pair of small banannas on the ear part because he's a "monkey man" and one guy with the callsign Bam Bam has the flinstones character on it. Again, it's just a small sticker. In top gun, those guys had thier helmets decorated towards their callsigns, like Merlin with his purple helmet with moons and stars, and SunDown with his helmet with the rising sun on it. Those types of helmets probably don't exist.

I believe there's an actual regulation that says your helmet must be at least 70% white-- in case you ditch in the sea, for the sake of being visible to the rescue guys...

Are there general helmets? or do you get a helmet fitted for you specifically when you start training that you carry w/ you your career?
