E-6 is called a Mercury. Modified Boeing 707s. Used to be EC-130 TACAMOs. They were the Navy's comm link to the boomer subs. They are now esentially a joint service flying command post for the national command authority. E-6s are based at Offut AFB, NB with the USAF command post type aircraft. Only talked to a couple E-6 guys before. They seemed to like it alot.

Well, not really. If we're talking about the same thing, JSTARS is kind of like an AWACS for ground targets. It can see vehicles on the ground and direct others to target them, as well as relaying that info to ground commanders. TACAMO is for controlling nuclear missile subs and other strategic weapons (think mostly nukes), so that the National Command Authority (the Pres, SecDef, etc.) can maintain comm with them in the event of war.
