Some of my buddies and I are planning on taking a road trip out west before leaving Corpus to move back to Whiting. We have a week and a half, and are looking at Dallas, Phoenix, the Grand Canyon, Vegas, in some sort of combination. We are all either East Coasters or from up North, and have no real clue of some places to hit, see, and go out to in Dallas and Phoenix, or anywhere else along the way that has some good parks or tourist spots. Anyone from around these places or been that way that can offer advice? Thanks....

Fort Worth is real close to Dallas and its a fun little city, and that's coming from a New Yorker. Good luck and have fun on your trip.

Dont bother going to Tombstone I loved the movie thought it would be cool to visit, it sucked. Taos New Mexico is cool, Vegas is always good. Phoenix also good.

i recommend making some time to hit up San Diego, with the beach, downtown, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Mexico (dont get in trouble); you can't go wrong with all the various entertaining options available.

Good plan --- take the "lesser" highways and see/enjoy some of the quaint little SW towns. I've always liked Tucson and Albuquerque (sp?)-- not that either one of them is "quaint" or "little" ...

Whoever suggested Ft. Worth had a good idea --- I lived and survived in the DFW area for many years and FW is one of the best kept secrets in the MetroPlex. Especially a couple of restuarants/saloons in the Stockyards. Can't remember the name --- but the one on the NW side of the main intersection of the Stockyards had a New York cut steak (which is usually too tough) that you could cut with your fork. PERFECT !!! The White Elephant Saloon --- good place to "experience" FW saloon life .........

Oh, you can go wrong in Tijuana. You can go VERY wrong. Be careful down there if you go. I'd just stay in SD the whole time. That place is awesome.

GOT IT !!!! H3 Ranch ..... great steaks.

Their website says:

Named one of the best steakhouses in the Fort Worth/Dallas area, Hunter Brothers' H3 Ranch, Live Hickory Wood Grill offers a wide variety of steaks, rainbow trout, lip-smackin' ribs, chicken, spit-roasted pig and much more - all served with a smile in comfortable, casually upscale surroundings.

Blah, blah, blah ..... and stay away from Tijuana --- unless you are "lucky", or are a GAF or are just determined to learn the hard way --- take my "experienced" (?) word on that ..... or don't. :cowboy_12

Done a couple Dets to DWF. That place rocks. Highest density of strip clubs in the whole country. If you decide to come all the way to SOCAL, hit me up and I'll take care of you.

diego, vegas, grand canyon, carlsbad(sp?) New Mexico, lake Taho (cali/nevada), and if you want to make the trek up to northern cali, lake shasta, redwood forest, yosemite national park (awesome place), lassen. all good places to visit

He'll dazzle you with terms like "Code Red."
If you want to see some good parks, drive around southern Utah. Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, Escalante NM, Canyonlands, Arches, etc. Those are all out of the way enough that you can avoid the crowds. You can keep yourself happy for a pretty long time hiking around and playing on all the cool geological formations. Also, if you want to see the Grand Canyon, the north rim (approaching from Utah) is a lot less crowded than the south rim (coming up from Flagstaff). Can't say too much about the nightlife in that area, though, unless you want to get in a fight with some ranchers.

Hmmm, lots of awesome places to see (I've lived in Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, so I'm biased). Listing places to see that are unique for their scenery (these aren't nightlife intensive places, just cool places with stuff you won't find anywhere else). A lot of good spots to go hiking/climbing, or just to drive through for the scenery.

New Mexico: Santa Fe, Taos.

Arizona: Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Sedona.

Colorado: Durango, Telluride.

Utah: Arches, Monument Valley.

Those are the places that come up off the top of my head ... I'm sure that there are plenty more.

Zion and Bryce Canyons are definately good trips. Less tourist-y than the Grand Canyon. (Although that's certainly one not to miss) Not too far a drive from Vegas and St. George, Utah is a town to check out if you're heading that way.

Come on, the FBI would have given him twins!
if you're going through albuquerque, you can always jump on old route 66-- which pretty much runs parallel to the new one. there's a great place to eat in bernalillo-- i think it's called 'abuelita's new mexican restaurant,' but i'm not sure. it's an adobe building, with lots of flowers, a waterfall type thing inside, and a huge patio. they serve mexican/ new mexican food. it's really good, (spicy), and they give you a lot. sopapillas are great there, too. (note: a lot of blue corn dishes in NM.)

NM has a lot of touristy things too-- indian reservations (casinos), taos, santa fe, sandia crest/sandia labs in albuquerque, los alamos, etc.

if you've never seen a desert sunrise/sunset, i recommend that you do it in both NM and AZ, as the types of desert are different. you'll be at a much higher altitude than when in corpus, (drink water!), and remember that the desert gets cold when the sun goes down.

I forgot ... M&M Truckstop in Cortez, CO used to be (10-12 years ago) a great place to stop and get Mex food if you're out that way.
