He bowls overhand.
When one applies via OCS, aren't the communities selected independent of each other? In other words, the OP didn't get pilot because he listed NFO and SWO, but because the boards deemed him unqualified for pilot, regardless of his other two listings?

I get the impression that the OP thinks that listing NFO and SWO on his app made the board bypass pilot when he otherwise would have been selected. Not really sure how the boards work, so I'm curious how they would actually do that.

once again you guys bring about some interesting points, especially SNA2007

"Also SNFOs in the top percentile of their API class are allowed to put in a transfer package."

whether or not i get it when i submit is again up to the needs of the navy etc but there are still chances for me.

i will be just fine sitting rio, mission and using these tools of war to do a job and be at least in the cockpit is more than i ever could have hoped for....you should see the road i have traveled to get here!!! i would have loved the physical demands of the Marines but i talked to a guy who was an NFO today, actually a kick a$$ Captain and he really laid out what he did and what they get to be apart of and how they are also just as vital to the jet or aircrafts mission as a Pilot is. I can finally relax and take what oppurtunity has been given to me and make the best of it. I have a real confidence and same respect for an NFO's job that i have allways had for a Pilot's. If i do or don't later get picked up for Pilot then that will be just as great a job as i could ever get out of the navy in my mind. Gotta get off the ground, spent enough time below sea level, need to try evening out my career with some above sea level time!!!!!

thanks everyone you have been a great help!!!! Hoorah Naval Aviation...

I'm just curious, but do you have something against Marines? That's the vibe I got from this post. The surest way to make sure that you're not a pilot is to not try in the first place. As an NFO, you can still attrite the program or get airsick. Bottom line for the OP - if you really want to be a pilot, go for it, but make sure you want to be a Marine first.

Actually, I commend people for being a Marine and wanting to join the Marines. Did a tour on the USS BATTAAN during, what you can call, The Second Gulf War. The Marines that went over and came back were the true heroes. We were just their taxi.

But, you hit the nail on the head and the point that I was getting at. You can Attrite just as easy in the NFO pipeline as you can going Pilot. And if you do it after switching over to the Marines then you are faced now with the question of whether it was worth switching over, attriting out, and now being a Marine......and all you wanted to do was be a Pilot.

About the only thing you can guarantee while being in the Military is that you get paid on the 1st and the 15th. Everything else is up to you. If you want to be a Pilot, but get NFO....be the best NFO. No matter what job you do in the military, the goal is to get promoted to the next rank. The position you do it in is just your job.

Another A-Pool Guy
I was just pro rec for SNFO this month. SNA was my first choice. I guess I underestimated my packet and got cocky because I have a flying job on the outside and kind of had an attitude like, "The navy would be dumb not to pick me up!" Well they really straightened my attitude out! I was turned down! lol I am really excited about being a navy officer and after talking to a Commander in phx that was an NFO I wish that I would have researched more and placed NFO as my first choice! I have talked to NFOs who have felt the same way. Plus its not like we will never fly, there are flying clubs on bases. I plan on keeping current while serving as an NFO.:)
