Cent Comps are into the 10:1 compression ration range, which, stuck at the end of an axial spool, isn't half bad. Weight and cost savings too... just not efficient in big sizes I guess...
Starter unit for the F-16 is a single stage Centrifugal Comp/Centrifugal Turbine. Pretty cool machine. Looks like a turbo charger, but delivers 200 some-odd horses. Wouldn't mind throwing that on a go-kart/riding lawnmower/the jeep/ etc.
