Oh my God, 46Driver, what the hell was that? When I tie one on this weekend I'm going to visit that link again. How do you people even find stuff like that? What a tune...

I'd like to correct some information that I've put out on this thread. There's been some confusion about what types of boots are allowed at USMC OCS. I've been a part of that confusion. In my defense, other officer candidates and applicants have posted confusing info too. This must have reached somebody important because there is an update on the Marines OCS website addressing this very issue. Apparently, black boots will now be allowed for hikes and PT. So officer candidates will be allowed to bring black boots to OCS. As far as which boots are recommended, I'm sure there are plenty of Marines who can offer suggestions.

Kimphil, I'm impressed!
Bates or Hi-Tech Magnums are both very comfortable. I wore Mags for the humps and field evolutions. All through TBS I wore the Tan gortex boots and loved them. I little heavy for PT though.

Good luck to all you candidates! I'll need some too, I'm on my way to Pensacola in a couple of weeks.

...come on eyes, hang in there.....

What are those? Like the bates lights? I have a pair of bates lights and they fit that description- but dont you go and hump in them.....AS good as they feel doing normal day to dy stuff- when there is a lot of weight put on them they smushed down so much that the didnt hold to what I expect in boots on a hump. But for OCC- when the packs cant wiegh what they will in the fleet- I guess the bates light would rock.

This is from a ppt presentation given to those of us about to make the drive from Quantico to FL. Obviously, unless you are #1, the needs of the Marine Corps will always apply. Hope it helps.

Don't hold them to the "#1 gets first choice" statement right now. A buddy of mine selected about 3 weeks ahead of me was number one (with like a 54, wanted helo's--didn't even put strike on his card and still got jets). Always and foremost remember that needs of the service above ANYTHING else.

This topic was addressed in the book Air Warriors. One of the aviators scored "too high" in primary, and was put in the jet pipeline even though he wanted helos.

I've just checked the USMC OCS website and they've removed the part about Officer Candidates being allowed to bring black boots. I don't know if you're allowed to bring black boots or not. I wished they'd make up their minds!

On the boot issue, I personally recommend wearing a broken in set of standard issue black boots. They are by far hotter then Bates but they will provide you ample protection during OCS. Roll one ankle and you will be heading home but I'm a traditionalist. I still have and still run in my OCS PT boots. 17 years and still going strong. I'm not thouroughly impressed with the new suede boots in regards to durability. I have a pair of Bates JDB that I hump (yes, I still hump) in but prefer my ol blacks. Semper, Frumby

Thor - you seem to have a great attitude, and that is really all you need in training. If you want to be there and don't forget that you want to be there, you will have no problems. None of the training - Marine officer, or aviation training - is impossible. It will be a rewarding experience if you appreciate it when it is challenging, and stay focused and driven when it is not (because sometimes waiting for the word at TBS, cleaning your weapon at OCS, and chair flying in primary are not the most exciting things in the world). The best things I can tell you - study like crazy for the flight test if you have not already taken it. Go Marine. You will never regret it. Get a flight contract, because they are hard to come by out of TBS. Prepare yourself for the weather at OCS. It's hot and humid in the summer, and cold enough to bother you in the winter, because you are outside most of the time. Run in boots. And stay motivated. It's all very simple if you maintain your focus. People want jets, but don't get them because they don't want to study as much as they know they should. Others have great grades, but bad timing. No one can promise you anything, so be prepared to work for want you want, and to be happy with what you get. That attitude will make your journey the most fulfilling.
Good luck.
