U.S. Carrier 'warned' not to return to the Persian Gulf by Iran

Sometimes the means are an end in themselves. See also: misguided government social policies.

I dunno guys, the Iranians were able to track a US aircraft carrier through the Strait of Hormuz! I mean, holy crap, that's like a 1000' long, metal ship...it a very narrow international waterway...so...impressive...

I really don't know how we're going to beat these guys!

It certainly is a good thing that Iran "chased us out" of the Gulf. This way we could rescue MORE Iranian fishermen...

Typical imperialist American propaganda >_>

But Iran's Fars news agency expressed suspicion about the operation, saying it was "like a Hollywood film" which "seems to have been pre-organised".

I wonder if they'll use the same descriptives when their nuclear sites are ablaze and their entire Navy is sitting on the bottom of the Persian Gulf. :D

What do you all make of "Millennium Challenge 2002"?

I have seen a few interneters argue that this is how a naval engagement with Iran might actually go down.

To me it sounds like it was just a poorly designed war game and that its weaknesses were exploited by the "red team" commander. I don't see what happened in MC2002 ever being a reality.

I'm familiar with MC '02. The wiki-assessment is made by a lay person who obviously doesn't understand how exercises and war gaming works. There's also very little value in discussing any lessons learned from such endeavors in an UNCLAS setting. Thusly, take what you read with a big grain of salt.

This wargame has so much freakin' baggage, no one who knows what happened takes it seriously.
I think the only things you can take away from MC 02 are:
1) EBO is a VERY BAD idea
2) Our current exercises are so scripted that no one actually gets anything out of them.
3) We truly do not learn anything from our own mistakes.

And who is to argue with them?!!

In reality all Iran might be able to do is get a few lucky shots in. Sadly that would still be considered a huge 'victory' for Iran over the US by many in the world.

Those few lucky shots can give us one hell of a bloody nose over here, as long as we're all sitting around feeling awesome about how we've done against a bunch of poorly equipped middle eastern Jihadists for the past 10 years.

TRUE...We would do well to remember what self-inflicted "un-lucky" shots ignited in the ORISKANY, FORRESTAL & ENTERPRISE disasters back in the day. CVNs w/ their fuels, weapons & LOX jamming the flight/hangar decks, are a conflagration looking for a place to happen, 'specially during flight quarters. Other surface vessels...not so much.
