Shnugg, wasn't the "Gauntlet and Mig" the VF-43 patch? I have one of those from when I was a youngin'. A friend of the family (and squadron member) hooked me up w/ it. It was like gold to a 10 year old.

We had it on our coins as well. It was a pretty neat patch (worn on Fridays) that was also good for shenanigans on the road because it didn't have the command on it anywhere. Pair that with the appropriate air show name tag and you're in business. :D

I remember the post-Tailhook "Bart Simpson" patch.

The Wing absolutely banned the patch from flight jackets, so I wound up sewing them on the inside of the jacket. All you could see from the outside was the tell-tale stitching.

Who says Naval Aviators aren't creative? :)

Our med-evac guys here have patches that say "The Louder You Scream, The Faster We Come." I'll see if I can get one scanned in.

Did a TAD stint in HC-2 in Norfolk, they had the H-3s. They had a patch that said "Flying Yesterday's Helo...Tomorrow."

This one requires a little setup.

Just before this patch came out, the Port-O-Let in the CALA at Pendleton had this written on the wall:

"Hornet guys hate Harrier guys,
Harrier guys hate Cobra guys,
Cobra guys hate Cobra guys."

It captured the whole "eat their young" thing that so many people had forewarned me about my community.

Soon, we started wearing a patch that had the squadrons maltese cross in the middle and this written around the outside:

"We Hate Each Other - But We Hate You More"

The kicker is that we took these to Okinawa with us. One of our Hueys had to make an emergency landing in a school yard during school hours out in town, and of coure the local press rushed to the scene to get pics. The next day, there was our interpid Huey bubba on the front page, grinning from ear to ear with his Warbird parked on the soccer field with his shoulder patch prominently proclaiming to the Okinawans reading their morning papers that we hated each other, but we hated them more....the Wing CO put the kaibosh on the patch, and so it rides with me in the cab of the Ram 1500 to this day....:icon_smil

my dad tells a great story about the time he's on a 6th fleet cruise in the late 70's and he's wearing his Xcountry/airshow nametag on his flightsuit "Hugh Jardon"..... I guess one of the catholic chaplains walk past him down th p-way while he's escorting a vatican emissary from Rome....he looks at my Dad and introduces him to the Padre as "LT Jardon"....

The Banned Tailhook 91 patch

My favorite.

That patch was the best one to come out of the seemingly endless witch hunt/inquisition that came out in the aftermath of the now infamous Tailhook 91 episode. Commands banned it under pressure from the PC leadership posture that ensued so it went underground and many wore it inside their flight jackets. If I recall correctly, it came out of a Navy Prowler squadron. It is truly a classic and top of my Top Ten list.
