USCG to bid on AF C-27J

Wish the Army would've tried to get them back, the Sherpa's are old!

Nice M$ FSX flight sim pic, there is a USCG repaint as well.

Sapper!

Excuse the BS...
Well, I hope you get more than that. Weren't 27 C-27Js the original purchase quantity? Where did the other 13 go? Anyway, based on reading specs, etc., the C-27 is the best & most versatile of the twin-engine, European-made light transports out there - and, hell, it fits right in w/ the CG love for things European!

Maybe they gave them back to the Army?...not

Looks like this is gonna actually happen. 14 aircraft at that!
USCG have a medium cargo-lift mission? I did not know that. Good to know.

I always thought the CG ought to re-invest in multi-engine amphib capability for long-distance rescue-at sea. Something like these:

The USCG uses medium-sized aircraft for SAR and MPA where the big HC-130's aren't needed. The original plan was to replace the HU-25's (Dassault Falcon exec jets) with HC-144's (Airbus CN-235's). They already have a few HC-144's but the C-27J's have commonality with the HC-130J's and better yet, are paid for already sans mission equipment. The catch is that the C-27's are more expensive to operate, in the short term though that matters less.

Neither one of those is good at open-ocean operations, they can't land and take-off in rougher ocean seas that the USCG often finds itself operating over. The only true open-ocean amphibious aircraft being made right now is the Japanese US-2 and they are very expensive. While appealing to the cool factor their practical utility to the USCG is probably minimal, if they want something long range that can pluck people out of the water way out there it is probably better better to invest in something like H-47's or V-22's, even then they probably don't have a need.

Or call the Navy or AF, since they can get out there farther and/or are probably already on station.

True, I caveated it with the 'if they want' becasue they don't seem to want or need it right now. Same with aerial refuelling, it might be a 'nice to have' for a few situations they have to deal with but not often enough that they would want to make the investment.

I agree. Just clarifying the overall SAR plan and it's various tiers, at least anecdotally based on how I've seen them employed.
