Hey,

I'm considering extending my verizon contract so that I can get a new phone for free. I've had a good experience with them so far, but I wanted to know how their coverage is down south. I've heard its pretty crappy in Meridian. Any thoughts or recommendations on this?

Thanks,

Mike

I've had Verizon for two years now, and it's worked everywhere except Graves Hall at Camp Barrett in Quantico. Just got a new phone w/ all kinds of bells/whistles/blinky sh!t, too. Worked well in Corpus, and it's working well here in the backwoods of FL.

I've had Verizon since '01, and it worked well everywhere I went (CA, HI, FL, NV, etc) except for the intersection at North Island where all the aircraft are on sticks and at Barking Sands on Kuaui.. But NI pretty much sucks whereever you go and Barking Sands isn't covered officially. Now that I'm back in the backwoods of Pace, it's still working great.

Verizon sucks in Meridian. Make sure your roaming map is updated (*228) before you leave the Verizon network and you are on a plan which doesn't charge you roaming on the "extended network" because that's what Meridian is. Verizon doesn't officially cover the area. Down by the mall and in some sections close to downtown it's OK, but on base and in the developments north of town, reception is horrible.

I had verizon for a few years and loved it then moved to New River and had "extended network" in this whole area. I had to get rid of it, kept dropping calls, lots of static, etc.

So long as your Preferred Roaming List is updated, it works fine in Meridian with the newer phones. However, you are not on Verizon's network, they do not cover a square inch of Mississippi.

Extend your contract, I love it and have had verizon for 5 years now. It has worked everywhere that I have been. Being that your title says that you are still BDCP SNA, I would not worry about the coverage in Meridian as if and when you get there, your contract would be up anyway.

Except at my house. I guess I live in a cell phone hole, so I'm biased.

My company has had Verizon for about 8 years now maybe longer but that's how long I've worked here. I love them. They have the most coverage of any company. I travel a lot, as many others here, and have only gone 1 or 2 "out in the middle of no where" places where it didn't cover. Of course no other carrier works there either. Plus I'm usually camping for that situation and don't want to be reached. The whole "extended network" thing isn't that big of a deal. Just keep the phone updated as someone else mentioned (*228)and it's all good. Ohio isn't covered by Verizon either. My ex lives there and I dropped calls going across the border when I switched from Verizon to extended network but that was all. Once I was on the network I never dropped a call while over there. I also never get charged for roaming.

It's worked all over hawaii, Cali, Canada, Key West, I have Mexico and Europe too in my plan costs more but I don't pay the bill so it's up to the company, HEHE!

Thanks for all the info. I decided to extend my contract and I got a pretty kick ass phone, an LG vx8100, it even has an mp3 player. Not sure what I need that for on a phone, but BDCP money needs to be spent on stupid things anways, right? I called up Verizon and they said with their worry free guarantee that if I was stationed somewhere and I didn't get reception I could terminate my contract without any fees.

My dog ate my phone this morning and so I figured now was the perfect time to see if I should keep Verizon. I did a search and I found the exact info I was looking for (imagine!) - thanks everyone. Good to know Verizon has the best coverage.

So does anyone have recommendations for a good phone? I don't need a lot of bells and whistles; just a durable phone with a long battery life. I guess I wouldn't mind a camera phone. I'm going to be using it for business as well so a small phone with email would be great. Thanks!
