NEWS VFA-213 Super Hornet mishap in Key West

I was also hopeful since they were both picked up - prayers to the Blacklion family...

Sad day. I too went to bed thinking they were alive and well. My thoughts and prayers to the entire VFA community but mostly the families of this crew.

There are some more eyewitness reports being published on what happened, not going to put anything here, we all know how to use Google and want to avoid speculation.

RIP guys...

Is it normal practice to have in VFA squadrons the USAFA graduates as a pilots? BTW, A Key West NAS CO now is Capt Bobby Baker, a West Point graduate...

The service academies have a limited number of cross-commissioning opportunities for each class. In recent years it's been about a dozen or so per class. Usually the people they approve for it either want to pursue a career track/specialty that's not available in their current service (e.g., a West Point grad interested in submarines) or have some family history or connection with another service.

Thanks Uncle, understood. BTW, in WWII in RAF there were special rules for each airplane as to what the crew has to do being over water if the airplane fails. For example, Bristol Beaufighter had to be ditched, while DH Mosquito was banned from ditching and the crew had to bail out. What about nowadays birds? Could the Super Hornet be trapped in a situation when it is better to ditch it? Those two Blacklions had evidently enough guts to try to ditch it.

For LCDR Brice Johnson: "A visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 23 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church (212 19th Street, Virginia Beach VA). A missing man formation flyover will follow the service on the beachfront with a reception immediately following."
