I know the Wing CO (Capt. Brian Costello, Commander of the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One) that did the relieveing.

Absolutely great guy. I served with him in Bahrain. Very level headed.

Agreed, Cos is an awesome guy and will hopefully give TACAMO a much needed shot in the arm of great leadership. I'll leave it at that.

Whatever the skipper did (I don't know myself) was either a. pretty heinous, b. very public, or c. both of the above to get relieved by such a solid dude for something that happened in his personal life (as alluded to in the article). Whatever it is won't get discussed here unless it appears in the press.

TACAMO kind of has a way of staying out from under the big Navy microscope due to it's location and mission. I am betting that isn't the case at the moment.

Exactly. continued allusions to "I have a secret" or "send me a pm and give me the scoop" will lead to this being locked.

Did you know Sluggo too? I think he was with -75 at that time -- I was his RB/N for RAG CQ when he came back through as a single anchor.

I knew Sluggo initially from when he was a Replacement B/N back in 1986 (a few classes behind me). He was in the 8-man bunkroom when he came back through as a pilot in 1992/93.

I've never know a guy who tried harder to get out of the Navy, but stayed around as long as he did. He finally got out around 1998 and went into the reserves. Was way low on the totem pole at American for a long time. Haven't seen him for about a year. He was flying for Blackwater, but that may be dated info.

I'm sure we know each other since I was a guest flier over @ VA-42 about the time you guys were going to the boat. I CQed w/ Eric "Spoolin" Scheulin on his second attempt. He's w/ Delta now I think.

Where did you end up?

cool -- always wondered what happened to him.

As for me, went to VA-36 before they de-commed (Deyke, McNally, and Himler were my CO's) then transitioned to TACAMO when the mighty Intruder went away.

When will people realize that who you are sleeping with, short of a subordinate or enlisted person has nothing to do with character - what a waste of talent!

Part if the problem is the arcane thinking that sex has something tio do with virtue - which is does not of course. Ugh!

We don't have enough African American leaders as it is - the Navy can't afford this!

While this is sad, and I certainly don't know all of the details in this particular case, I would counter:

"When will people realize that no sexual daliance is worth your career?"

Keep it in your pants and it won't be an issue.

Chuck, he screwed himself.

I don't care what the color of a leader's skin is.....if they can lead, they can lead.....the last thing we need is affirmative action and quotas coming into how we pick our leaders for warfare.

I just finished a school that had the Inspector General come and he discussed with us why CO's get fired. Not keeping their pants on is the #1 reason. The class had some folks in it who knew this story - and it wasn't just the sex that was an issue. It's amazing the repeated stories of CO's who lost touch with reality and think they are "untouchable" or it "won't happen to them".

It may seem that we have a lot of CO's fired, but 12-13 a year is the long term average (2003 was an anomoly with 20+). Out of the 1440+ CO's in FFC, that's less than 1%!

Didn't know there were that many COs. Jeez.

There are actually some more than that, but the 1,440 figure is who falls under Fleet Forces Command.

When you think about it, you start to see where they all come from. Every squadron, ship, Major Command, ROTC Unit, hospital, recruiting district, wing, ship Commodore, SEAL team, etc has someone who is a Commanding Officer, they just might have a bigger title (CAG, Commodore, etc). When it comes to the being relieved part, they are all ultimately CO's and they can be Detached for Cause.
