The A-6 purge was a case study in how not to take care of your people.

Disagree.... F-14 since they transtioned Squadrons seemed to fair better.. But S-3 guys (YG92-95) got screwed except the few that transitioned straight of their JO tour... Paul Correli is the only one, I know to transition after DEPT HD and screen for command.. I can't think of any others... On the pilot side, there may have been some NFO names I don't recognize.. I think 'Hogger' may have screened but I thought that was for VS which means he is done after that.. And he is a piece of work anyway (marrying his friend's ex-wife and dating her before they were divorved!)

WTF does that have to do with anything here?

The last few posts discussed transitions... So I added my too cents.. In my opinion, it was pertinant! Should I mention something about somebody has accomplished something, in my opinion, is percieved as good (Screening for command); then I will be sure to note, that they are not necessarily of good character (ie.. no friend of mine)!

Too put it more into perspective thru my eyes:
I was too senior for transition board,
I had good FITREPS (EPs and all),
Was told with the S-3s going away were less Dept HD billets,
I did not screen for 0-5 or command for that matter,
I DID NOT date any of my friends wives.

PS: I was planning to get out anyway but didn't leave too many options if I had wanted to stay!

Didn't Sarge screen for command of a VFA? He's a member here, but haven't seen him in awhile. He was CAG Paddles on the Stennis in 2000.

HD,

PM me Sarge's real name (unless that is Paul, I know him in a social environment and never knew Paul in the Navy-different coasts)... Correlli is VFA. When I last talked with him, he said 1) the hornet is super easy to fly and 2) that he is probably one of the last lucky S-3 guys to pick up a transition late in the game.. Chum just picked up CO of the VR SQN at Andrews. He was CAG Paddles on some west coast ship.. I don't know? But he got out and picked it up in the reserves... Don't know if he was offered a transition or not while he was in... Guess flying hornets part time was enough for him and he didn't want to fly them full time like his other 3 brothers???

The A-6 purge was a case study in how not to take care of your people..... I think Navy learned from that disaster ....
I saw a few (more than 2) RIF's and decomms. They were all perceived as mistakes in hind-sight and half-measures (?) were taken later to ameliorate the damage and to (hopefully) not repeat it.

But: the NAVY never learns when it comes to people "problems", i.e., personnel issues and staffing. The NAVY, God Bless it, ALWAYS eats its own.

Believe it. :)

P.S. ... I "got mine" and did much "better" than I probably deserved, so this is not a personal rant/issue. Just an observation, based on > 30 years of Naval "observations" and just one's $20 worth. :)

Regarding the A-6 transition, there was a lot of hate by some of the guys in my squadron that were USNR and told to go home -- not that they were really planning to make it a career anyway, but they wanted their payback shore duty, so for them the RIF/transition was a bad deal. I didn't really see a lot of guys get axed that weren't planning to stay in anyway -- but that whole USNR situation did cause a lot of friction between the AOCS/ROTC folks and the boat school guys.

As for the transition, I think it depended what community you went to -- I was lucky to get to TACAMO which was a pretty accepting community -- the last 3 CO's have been A-6 mafiaso, and a good portion of TACAMO CO's have been guys from other communities. I think the A-6 bubbas that went Prowlers also did well? Maybe because a lot of them went there? Not sure about the other communities, but have heard some horror stories. One guy I knew, got F-14's then DH screen put him in E- 2's and he screened for E-2 command, and now a CAG? ... so in the end, it worked out for him, but at the time, I thought, ugh, flying around the boat in the tube, w/o ejection seats?

Who was the F-14/E-2 guy to CAG?

He was in the RAG as an instructor while my wife was a TC-4C pilot there, so perhaps she knows more...

Amy Peterson?

...and what about the A-6 crew that was bombing smoke out in the desert and ended up putting blue death through a camper?
