How Long does it TAKE!
Here is a comment form a parent of a recently (January 07)
winged Jet Driver.
"Today we attended the winging ceremony of our son. Perseverance is what got him through this past year of Advanced Flight Training.
A note for parents and mids who have or want Navy Pilot as their
service selection. The stats given to us today are that approximately 60% of pilot trainees make it through API and Primary, which means 4 in 10 do NOT. In our son's class out of Primary, only the top two students were given their first choice of jets. 12% of the students who get to jet training do not make it through Advanced. In other words, getting Navy Pilot at Service Selection is but the first step on the long and difficult road of becoming a Naval Aviator. Our son went to Pensacola
in May 2004 when he completed grad school. His flight training (API, Primary and Advanced) took 2 years and 8 months.
His 8 year aviation commitment started today. At this point he goes to the squadron in CA to learn how to fly the Hornet, and that training will take about a year, maybe a little less. Then he will join a fleet squadron. He will have spent almost as much time in training as he did in college.
Let your mid know what to expect so that s/he understands it's not a foregone conclusion that s/he will be a Navy Pilot. They need to work hard from Day 1 in API, all the way through Primary and into their advanced training."
