sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

A couple questions popped into my head today, so this is a two parter. For some context, my OCS class date is October 4th

1. Since I was given my ship date a few days ago, I knew it was going to overlap with my birthday (Go me). I was wondering if there is any sort of special tradition that occurs for people who's birthday's occur during OCS

2. Again, since my OCS class date is so late into the year, I was wondering what the whole process is when national holidays, in my case, Xmas and New Years come up. What happens during those types of holidays?

1. Nope.

2. There’s a command wide stand down where no training will take place for around ~2 weeks. You may be able to take leave and go home during that time, you should have 5 days built up by the stand down. It’s subject to approval.

You probably can find answers to both on this forum / thread if you take the time and look.

On a local front, I would ask your recruiter to hook you up wiry an OHARP ENS or two to help you out in person.

1. Nothing special will happen

2. There will be a stand down that starts before Christmas and ends after the New Year. The exact dates for the stand down will probably not be decided until late November or early December. Important to note, the stand down will be split up into two blocks, one for Christmas and one for New Years. Half of your class will go on the first block and the second half your class will go on the second block since there still needs some students. Come to the realization now that you might not come home for Christmas. For leave, they will allow you to go into negative for the leave, so you will be able to take the whole week if you want to. Your leave will be submitted with a paper request chit, so it is unlikely that you will be charged for your leave. It has been over four months since I submitted mine and I still have have not lost any leave days.

Update from my recruiter:

He tells me that SNA is supposed to offer a pass or fail prior to NFO issuing a contract. Can anyone corroborate this? It would explain why a week has passed since “passing” NFO and still not receiving an NFO memo/contract.

Also, can anyone confirm or deny this train of thought:
June is when the next fiscal year for quotas happens, which means we’re at the end of the previous year -> very few slots remaining. Communities anticipate new slots in June, so the month prior (May) they pull from ISEL/BDCP applicants to prefill. Does this mean that around May 1st is a key date for many of us waiting patiently for SNA ISEL updates?

Boards have been taking next FY (FY-27) for a while now. Normal OCS applicants can apply 12 months out.

Why did you apply for NFO if you didn't want to be one and ultimately declined?

I was recommended to do so in case I was DQ’d from SNA for an unexpected reason, avoiding having to reapply for another board. This appears to have been a mistake, but I’m just an applicant that trusted his recruiter (for better or worse).

Of course I totally prefer going SNA, but I’m cool with going NFO as long as I am given a fair look at SNA first.

Not sure if there are many if at all any that I could meet in person where I live, but I could shoot a text over to my recruiter to see if I could get in contact with a recent OCS grad that coincidentally was at my region's last meeting.

Just say “hey I heard there’s this program called OHARP where OCS grads come back to their hometown to recruit before going to training. If there are any current ones I would really appreciate talking to one”
