Not the best week for Subs...

I love how they focus on the REACTOR and that there were no NUCLEAR missiles aboard. The press is so paranoid about that. Has there ever been a sub mishap where significant amounts of radio-active materials? Even the Soviet Mike (Mike datum make you...jump, jump! Ahh Khris Kross - those were good times:D) that went down due to a reactor fire (apparently) has only released limited amounts of radio-active material. Your thoughts, Scoob?

Spent four days "under the water" during CORTRAMID on the La Jolla .

Spent 4 years on a fast attack, glad im not on them anymore. Feel for the crew that lost their shipmates, dangerous life down in the deep.

We used to patrol IVO the Mike Datum out of Keflavik back in the day because there were always Soviet vessels monitoring the site and we used to sing that song while doing so.

If I wasn't going aviation, I definitely would have tried to go for subs. That stuff is fascinating. Anybody else agree?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have to be the next coming of Einstein to get picked.
 
Did 4 days on a SSBN as a MIDN. Actually a really cool experience... MUCH more room than on a SSN.
 
I still have that CD if anyone would like me to burn them a copy... "I missed the bus" was one of my favorites...

Hey, I was still born in the 70s (barely). Did two 6 month deployments to Kef. It was actually a really interesting place w/ especially harsh WX, but the Cold War was still on and it was no-kidding 12 on 12 off for 6 months and even the ready-1 offered limited respite, as you had a better than average chance of launching on the SOSUS hit du jour. Typical flying day would last ~14 hours from preflight to the walk home (for a 9.0 of flight time) and you were doing good if you managed a whole day off every 4-5 weeks. Different times for sure, but it made for some of my fondest memories.

Being in the Navy, in the Atlantic, during the Cold War must have been an experience.
 
Not sure I'd want to be TACAMO and have that on my shoulders... hell I still wouldn't want that on my shoulders. You complete your mission, the world just ended...

But, talk about being a huge part of the puzzle... hell, a vital part of the nuclear triad.

I've got some pretty interesting sea stories that are beyond the classification of this site - Soviet subs on the surface, Soviet warships lighting us up as we rigged them, sharks w/ laser beams, etc. Good times.
