I think I would rather that happen (perishing in the process) then to have to stick around in a post-armageddon On the Beach world...

I would imagine certain southern hemisphere environs being left relatively unscathed. Given the choice, I might opt for a Robinson Crusoe existence with a few of my crew-mates than a fiery end - become philosophers, or some other discipline for people with too much time on their hands.

...and I had just gotten winged when that sub hit the Japanese fishing trawler...

That's the sub I did my 3/c mid cruise on for three weeks. The crew was still convinced it was cursed, especially since after that incident it ran aground, then hit USS Ogden and tore apart its san tanks. They even had some Hawaiian priests come on board and exorcise the demons.

I had a blast, but it wasn't for me.

I did cortramid on the USS Alabama, funniest moment on the boat, convincing one of the female middies that "shooting water slugs" actually meant cleaning a metal dissolving creature from the side of the sub...

I was a TM and water slugs always got the guests thinking twice, we usually just told them we were shooting real torpedos, made them feel cooler
