The SWO Picture Gallery for those so inclined

Whoa - you guys are good! I missed the 91/95 one.... :o

PAO who approved the caption needs to make a cruise or two!

I've reposted many Navy.mil photos and taken quite the beating over the wrong captions. I think the MC's need to get their facts straight before submitting them for publication.

Unfortunately, this caption was probably released by the ship's collateral duty PAO, normally a young Ensign, who may not have run it through the XO or Captain. :irked_125

Typically, the MC/PAO staff push images to DC (CHINFO) with proposed caption where the staff selects which ones go on their on-line photo gallery and then further down select which ones go to DoD Public Affairs for their gallery. CHINFO assigns the official tracking "number" ( ie 091127-N-0000X-001 GULF OF ADEN).

Unless Captain is micromanaging, he may not even see what goes off ship, but a savvy PAO/MC will make she the Captain does see it. Of course, what is sent for captain may be rewritten by CHINFO or DOD on the their gallery thereby presenting opportunity to correct errors (or induce them).

Bring back memories anyone?

The trainer, which submerges into a 38,000-gallon pool, simulates a sinking ship to provide a realistic environment for teaching Sailors damage control techniques. Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world and America's Ship of State, is manned by 74 active duty Sailors and receives nearly half-a-million visitors annually. I loved the Buttercup.

We haven't built minesweeps in a long time, if I recall. Would it be correct to assume these are still being made of wood ... ???

Excellent assumption: Avenger Class MCMs as depicted have hulls of Fir/Cypress covered with a coating of glass impregnated plastic.

Good times!! The water must be a lot warmer now. When I went through we wore wash khakis (before the days of coveralls) and it was freezing!! I'm not sure why they are wearing the PT uniform. They should be wearing the same uniform they'll be wearing at GQ, Cond II DC or on the Flying Squad.

The trainer in Norfolk had us wear coveralls when I went through it during "baby" SWOS.

Speaking of trainer, Norfolk built a new trainer recently. It's pretty decent inside, this time around though they made restrictions on water depth so that it wouldn't go above 3 feet. Weak sauce.
