Im submitting with a 6,6,6 51.. think that would be good? SNA is my first choice NFO second.

Looking at the 04 distributions i fall into the 26.9% area.

Kind of pissed off that my PFAR scored didnt increase when I nearly aced every Nautical, Aviation, and spatial Ap. question on the test. Yet My math, reading and mech comp. score went up a point. Doest seem to make sense.

The test information page says that all subtest influence PFAR with Avi. Naut. and Spat. ap being the biggest factors that contribute. So how the heck do I increase my math reading and mechincal score for the AQR a point and then ACE the other 3 sections without raising the PFAR...

This boggles my mind

I submitted with a 5/6/5 51, picked up SWO with a 3.23 gpa and little school leadership experience, but I do have work leadership experience and good LOR's and essay.

My first score was a 4/5/4/ 44 and was told I should re-take. I would ask your recruiter to see what s/he says. I was told not to submit yet.

I'm submitting my package with 6/6/5 and a 56. My GPA is 2.96, so I feel like i'm riding the fence a little bit to say the least.

How does the OAR factor into the whole thing? I've never heard anyone describe its importance beyond just making the minimum. To me it seems to take a back seat to the first three scores, am I wrong?

Definitely put your package in with the scores you have!!! I got picked up for Pilot through STA-21 with a 5/5/5/48 and when I was going through my interviews for my package the Pilots that interviewed me all recommended against retaking the ASTB since I was above minimum requirements and you only get three chances!

Looks good. As everyone else will tell you, it's all about the "whole person" concept. I had a 6 7 6 52 and was turned down in the no infamous April '08 board, but retook and had a 7 8 8 58, pro-rec'd for SNA, NFO, SWO the very next month. You won't know until you apply but the scores are pretty good. Get that GPA up.

Flight school is all about absorbing large amounts of information and regurgitating it for a brief; but you also have to remember it for later use. I am using stuff in the FRS that I learned on day 1 of API (about 2 years ago).

Agree, but not always true...sometimes it's just good old fashioned laziness and/or immaturity. The fact that people who are older and go back for their education and do well is not a coincidence. When i was 20-21 I managed to get .75 and 1.0 GPA's...(i think its tougher to do this than get a 3.5 )...but now, at 25 and graduated, I pulled off 5 consecutive 3.2-4.0 semesters, it wasn't that I just all of the sudden found the "gift" of study habits..growing up and prioritizing has IMO a lot more to do with it.


AND as an edit... i finished with an unimpressive 2.55 GPA in Aviation Management + minor in business...but from a 1.something GPA to a 2.55 in a two year time span...that took a lot of filling a giant hole with dirt..using a baby spoon...so i'll take it...if anything it goes to show that all along i was capable of 4.0's

Dude, I graduated with a 3.02 in Animal Science, scored a 5/5/5 58, and am now in Advanced. School means nothing in the military, it is a completely different way of training and learning. I had academy guys, OCS guys, and ROTC guys in my primary and was the top academically. Got through primary with jet grades...don't let elitist attitudes get to you, and don't stop applying after your first rejection letter (took me 4 tries)

If all else fails, enlist, go aircrew, backdoor in through OCS.

As far as being lazy regarding study habits, not so. As far as poor study habits, not so. I work 40+ hours a week. I am the kitchen manager at a fine dining restaurant. It's a company I started with as a server and moved up to head server then kitchen manager. Anyways, all that work in the restaurant plus being in college full time (Aerospace Administration major, business minor) didn't leave much free time to do much of anything. Anyways, I don't have the luxury of having school paid for so I am a college student stuck in the real world with real bills and a real job to pay for those bills. Will the board like the fact that I'm a manager in a fine dining restaurant? I would imagine that they would look at my stats and think, "Hey this guy's GPA isn't stellar but it qualifies. He works as a full-time restaurant manger while going to school full time. That's good." Is this scenario completely unrealistic? But to set the record straight, look somewhere else for a lazy student. I work my a$$ off to pay for school, but if on BDCP pay I'd quit my restaurant job and have much much more time to study.

Here are my thoughts...

As said numerous times, they look at the whole person concept. Your GPA is a little low, your ASTB scores are okay and your work experience is excellent. There have been people picked up with a GPA lower than yours, ASTB lower than yours, work experience worse than yours. Then again, there have been people picked up with a GPA better than yours, ASTB better, work better etc, etc...

If I were you, here is what I would do...

Work into my motivational statement a sentence or two about how you worked 40+ hours a week gaining valuable leadership experience while paying for school, which resulted in lower grades. Let the board decide if you are whole person. Also, I probably wouldn't worry about retaking the ASTB. From what I have noticed here on AW, your scores are probably right in the middle of those applying. If you don't get picked up by the board, consider retaking for a better (remember, there is always the or worse category) score. Lastly, RELAX!!! Don't worry too much about what you cannot control. Just fill out the paperwork, send it to the boards, and hurry up and wait.

Thanks for the advice. Adding to the "whole person" concept, I'm a private pilot (60 hours). I feel like I have a decent shot at this. It's what I've wanted to do as long as I can remember, and now I'm 21, a junior in college and ready to make it happen. Thanks, I'll keep yall up to date on what happens with the rest of the process.

mtsupilot09...i was speaking for my own experience..i worked 30 hours a week and i had an internship at Boeing on top of that...with my 15 hours of school, i wasnt speaking for you, but with all of those extra things, laziness and immaturity contributed to my low gpa WHILE working almost full time and doing an internship.

Look at the bright side. If it doesn't work out on the first go around, you have 5 years worth of retries (for OCS anyway). Like it has already been said, you have scores and stats that were good enough for some to get accepted.

I would leave out the above underlined part. Keep the motivational statement positive all around. Can you say that you worked full time while going to school full time and still get the message across? Absolutely.
