Took the new version of the ASTB today... super bummed. I tanked on the math, i got tripped up on the easiest problems. Mechanical wasn’t bad however, I kept getting the literal same question 3 times. This happened a few times and it was causing me to second guess my initial answer.. not sure what was happening there.
The test crashed numerous times during my exam. It even crashed during the PMB portion twice and the headphones had to be plugged back in a few times to get them to function properly before I could move on past the practice for dichotic listening.
overall my score was a horrible 42 5/7/6
I really need to retake as I don’t even meet the minimum for Supply.
The aviation part isnt terrible just gotta increase the OAR and you’re solid. I got selected to be an NFO with a 50 5/7/7. Study and retake! Don’t stress over it, you’ll get a good score next time if you plan on retaking it.
For math, I studied a lot of DRT, probability, and fraction questions. Also know how to solve 4! And practice a lot of negative exponents. I got a lot of log questions which are super easy if you practice them!

I wouldn’t be able to re-take prior to the May board, I’ll have to submit with these scores and hope for the best.

Hi everyone,

For easier reading, I've underlined the important bits. To spare you the paragraph.
My first post on here, and I wanted to ask if I'd be considered a competitive candidate for SNA. I don't know the correct place to ask about this, so throwing it up on this board.

Age: 24
ASTB-E scores (Took it this morning) OAR: 61 8/7/8
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (Music) GPA: 3.06
Current job: Supervisor of a DPH COVID response specialized team
(Schools, gyms, churches, daycares for 13 counties). Basically running a team of 12 employees right now dealing with contact tracing and data collection.
Previous work: Factory work in high school, I.T. student worker for 6 months, Genetics lab tech for 1.5 years, Phlebotomist for 1.5 years at plasma clinic. Server at restaurant for 1 year, Case investigator at current job for 3 months then promoted to supervisor for another 5 months.

My GPA sucked, and I totally recognize that. What's worse, is that it wasn't even in a STEM field. I was double majoring Biology+Music for half my college career plus working 20-35 hrs/week to pay for college/survival. That's my excuse, I'm sticking to it!
I was hoping my ASTB would be high enough to compensate for my bad GPA, but my scores don't seem high enough to make up for it. (Especially my OAR, not very good...). Also, since I'm currently a supervisor I think that counts as leadership experience, so maybe that'll help tip the scales?

So what's the prognosis, folks? I know nothing is certain, and either way I'm going to be applying for the August 2021 Aviation board. But I feel like people here may have the answers.
I'll be calling my recruiter on Monday of course, but he usually takes a couple days to get back to me and I never get as in-depth answers as I'd like. I also don't want to wait that long to hear an informed opinion! :(

I appreciate all the posts this community has collectively made. It helped me feel more at ease going into the exam today, even if I didn't get the scores I wanted.

Your PFAR is right around average for those selected, but your GPA is slightly lower (STEM field or not, doesn't matter). I would argue you have a decent chance to be selected for SNA, but it all depends on other applicants who applied during that specific board review period. Your FOFAR is pretty high, as well as your AQR. I would submit an SNA/NFO packet as soon as you can. You should feel confident, too. Your scores are great.

Thank you for the response! Definitely feels good seeing myself as competitive. I was seeing a few places that GPA is weighted higher than my ASTB scores.
I really REALLY want to be SNA, it's the reason I got LASIK last year. Considering whether I should just apply pilot for this board, and if I'm not accepted then I can apply for pilot+NFO for the next one.

Thanks! I found the chart with people applying to the April 2021 board and it seems like I'm about average, maybe slightly below b/c of my GPA. Still going for that August board, so hopefully I get through.

I appreciate the encouragement!

GPA for aviation really isn't that important, unless it is really crappy, aviation is all about the ASTB and your scores are good.

If you really want to be a SNA only apply to SNA.

If a package is submitted for a specific board and I retake the ASTB, does that void the submitted package? For instance, the aviation boards are not until 24 May, I can retake the exam on 02 May but will that null my kit due to the new scores? Could I potentially retroactively submit the new score? Hopefully this isn’t confusing.

pretty sure exnavyoffrec had already previously stated this would invalidate any packages already at the board since the score is no longer current, so you should wait.

I had seen that response he made, I was just curious if I could retro-actively have the score submitted with the package.

once it is through the approval process to go to board that is it, before that point there is some wiggle room but depending on how busy they are if you retake and they have to do corrections you could miss the board, in some cases when there have been changes a person wanted to make they have just kicked back the entire application and had them make corrections, then resubmit for the next board.

Good afternoon, I'm new to the group and trying to apply to be a pilot. What is a good material to study for the ASTB?

Would anybody be able to chime in on this as a good mechanical comp study guide in addition to Kyle's 2019 guide? Also if anyone knows, how long do eye waivers usually take? Also because of this eye waiver thing, I got to push my original ASTB date from the 25th of March to the 22nd of April yay me more time to study. Also congrats to flying squid at the top who got 64 8/8/8! And whats this i've been hearing about lower scores for the exam?
hey do you know where I can find kyle's study guide and the gouges? I tried opening some of the links in the forum but they wont respond or open to me. I take the test soon. Im looking for a good source for math and mechanical comprehension
