I was under the impression you needed 5 to commision, are these extras?
There are the 5 you need that are just forms they fill out I believe, LORs are extra full on letters about you, please correct me if I am wrong. But that is my understanding of it.

Nah, you are probably right. I was told not to worry too much about extra in terms of that, so I completely purged them from my mind.

Yea I just figure that they can only help, probably carry little weight but just shows how others view your character.

Has anyone seen my wingman?
Taking the ASTB tomorrow, and feeling good about it. I took the AFOQT and TBAS for the Air Force years ago. I was initially worried because it's been so long since I had anything to do with any of the subject material, but after some weeks of prep, I'm feeling really confident.

See you on the other side.
So, I got a 54 6/7/5. Going for SNA so not really worried about the FOFAR score. Besides that, I'm moderately pleased with my results. I went into it with a good attitude and no expectations. In retrospect, I could've spent more time on it (like it took me 10 minutes to complete the 40-minute math section), but I'm fine with this score.

Anyway, nobody asked but I don't care, here's some advice for you future ASTB takers.

Math: take your time, write down your work, and practice a lot of algebra beforehand.

Reading: by far took the longest for me. Practicing for the reading was the easiest but it just took so long during the exam.

Mechanical: honestly, the easiest for me. Just general physics and electricity question

ANIT: similar to mechanical, wasn't too bad. Was worried about this one the most but I didn't have any issues with it.

PBM: not too bad, it ramps up in difficulty over time but just focus. Pretend like you're actually in a dogfight and just have fun with it.

I didn't really study much but I also felt like I didn't need to. I probably could've gotten a higher score if I studied more but I really think I could've just taken more time on the exam, I definitely felt like I rushed some questions for the sake of time- which I had plenty of.

If you're taking the ASTB soon, you're going to do well, I know it. Godspeed.

Does anyone know how the knobs on the emergency procedures test work after you execute the given emergency and press the clutch. Do you have to move both knobs back to neutral while you wait for the next scenario to be given?

I'll do you one better: The scenerios are always given in order, so you can do the first one, then just automatically set the knobs for the next one and then just press clutch when its time.

Thats huge thanks
Make sure when you press the clutch button, it registers as well the first emergency it did not. The x52 didn't work with their computer so I had an older one I'm sure that didn't help. A few times the clutch would not register I pressed it, maybe affected my scores a little, but nothing major. Just don't stress the PBM stuff, its easier than you think.

I would ammend this slightly and say that the UAV is a very important part of the PBM. The PFARs biggest influences are the ANIT and spatial apperception.

Agreed, very important parts. The app I believe is the best way to prepare for the UAV as well as for the ANIT, using the cram flashcards as well. I wasn't prepared for the spatial apperception part, that was the last one correct? Came as a surprise to me but worked it out.

Imo UAV is a larger effect on fofar and pbm has a larger effect on pfar. Makes more sense to me considering a pilot and nfos jobs. That said if you want an aviation slot, you need to knock both tests out.

I am getting my info from here: https://officer.marines.com/docs/oso/aviation/ASTB_Overview.pdf

"Pilot Flight Aptitude Rating (PFAR): This score is affected by performance on all subtests, but the greatest contribution is made by the Aviation & Nautical Info and Spatial Apperception Tests."

Ah OK. That document is a bit dated because the UAV test is not spacial apperception. Spacial apperception would definitely contribute to pfar if it was still on the test. The sa test was a picture from inside a cockpit and you had to determine which picture of an airplane was you based of your cockpit view from a selection of 5 airplanes from a 3rd person perspective.
