I swear I see SWO starting to prefer STEM degrees in these last few iterations. I wonder what transitions are happening in the Navy right now, especially with the massive upscaling we are seeing after the OMNIBUS package was signed in.

Your post makes ZERO sense.
Let me break it down for you then:

"SWO starting to prefer STEM degrees in these last few iterations" = according to last 2 years of of accepted applicants they have accepted >30% more STEM majors than the previous 5 years according to all 'documentation' posted here and USNAVYOCS (granted not official).

"Transitions are happening in the Navy right now, especially with the massive upscaling we are seeing after the OMNIBUS package was signed in" = The Omnibus package that was recently signed in by President Trump allotted for a huge increase in military spending, especially the Navy.

Navytimes has reported an increase from a 277 to 355 ship fleet (attempt) to be implemented in the upcoming decade. This can already be seen in the dramatic changes in Enlisted bonuses, Increased High year Tenure, 1 a year PRT, Relaxed Tattoo and drug policy etc. In other words things are changing big time in the Navy right now, and it will be interesting to see how it trickles down.

Your post is all BS. For SWO having a stem degree doesnt put you at an advantage. In the end, they want high GPAs and high OAR scores .

I didn't say it did, I simply posted stats from the last 8 boards and said they accepted 30% more stem over the past few years which is a fact, coincidence? maybe? Simply stating stats, sorry if you don't like them. You can put words in my mouth, but I never said it gave you an advantage, you said that. I also didn't say OAR or GPA wasn't a factor, so don't strawman me.

no one realistically believes we will get to 355 in 10 years, and the increase in billets would be slow, as it was there have been extra SWO officers floating around, especially SWO-N.

there is also a very low unemployment right now so many actions being taken will help reduce the exodus of personnel from the USN, this is not the first time this has happened.

That makes a ton of sense NavyOffRec. I was enlisted during the early 2000's and it was easy, all of a sudden 2008/2009 rolled around and things got crazy. It makes perfect sense that the economy and Navy (all military really) directly reflect this. I just was wondering what impact this will have in the next few years.

Talked to my OR today. Got a random call from Millington, TN asking if I planned to submit a package which made me a little nervous. My OR said he was "99.999 repeating" sure that I'd been submitted, but he had no info on the board as of yet. Could be tomorrow, could be a month. Time for some patience.

Checking in for this board, applying for Intel. Just got off phone with my OR; he said it usually takes 3 weeks to a month to hear results and then another 2-3 months until starting OCS (whereas pilots and NFOs start rather immediately upon selection). How does that line up with what you all have heard?

I know intel is super competitive, so I'm aware of how difficult it is to be selected. My OR said my application is "competitive" but I am curious to hear more feedback on how my package stacks up.
  • non-prior service, 25 years old
  • B.A. History (3.6 GPA), Marist College (NY)
  • M.A. Homeland Security (3.84 GPA), Pace University (NY)
  • 55 OAR
  • LORs
    • current Air Force pilot (close friend)
    • 2 college professors
    • baseball coach (retired Marine)
    • close friend (engineers nuclear subs for Navy)
Any insight someone can offer would be great, best of luck to everyone!

I've been lurking here a while, so I thought I should join and post my stats. I've applied for the June 2018 Intel board. What do you all think? How does my packet look?

  • 30 years old, no prior service
  • B.A. in Pre-Law 3.81 GPA
    • Classes emphasized history, foreign language, economics, and English
    • National Debate Champion 2009 (topic was US foreign policy towards China)
    • Study Abroad program in Spain
    • Scholastic Bowl Team Captain and Champion
  • J.D. (Juris Doctorate) 3.1 GPA, The College of William & Mary
    • Classes emphasized criminal law, national security law, and international law
    • VP Military and Veterans' Law Society
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • 4 years’ experience as an attorney at a major law firm
  • Prior pro bono work for a Veteran’s Benefits Clinic (my clients were disabled vets from all branches and I got them their VA Benefits)
  • 67 OAR
  • LORs:
    • USN O-3 Navy Intel officer and close friend of mine
    • USN O-5 Doctor and close friend of mine
    • Attorney w/ 40+ years of experience (my immediate supervisor)
    • Attorney w/ 30+ years of experience (the head of the law firm)
  • No interviews (I heard they usually do this the 2nd time around)
  • Applied for Intel 1830, though in retrospect I probably should’ve included cryptology as well
I've been told I'm competitive by my friend in the Intel program as well as by my OR, but I know it's a fiercely competitive program to get into, I don't have a STEM background, and my JD GPA isn't the best. It wasn't the best time of my life. Still, all of my other scores are quite high, I have an Ivy League doctorate, and I have some on-topic extra-curriculars. Do you think I have a decent shot at getting in? Is there anything I can improve on for next time if it doesn't work out?

There's a thread somewhere that some members of the recruiting community created called "how competitive am I?" or something along those lines. You might get some good info on your chances there. Seems like you could go JAG as well, but I wouldn't know. A 67 OAR can't hurt. Haven't heard from my OR this week, so I don't have any news on the board or the results. Maybe next week.

Thanks! I'll try posting there as well.

As for JAG, I've already applied 5x times with no success. They have dozens of slots with multiple boards per year for law students, but only 1 board and 1-2 slots for licensed attorneys. So the chances of getting selected for a Direct Commission are next to nil.

Besides, Intel sounds more interesting - and better suited for a full 20-30 year career, which is what I'm going for.

I don't expect we'll hear from the Intel board for a few weeks yet. I'm hoping I get in. I've been intensely interested in a Naval career for many years now, and I'd like to finally get started.
