24MAY2021 Pilot/NFO Board

I wanted to be a pilot, now the older I get I realized... I would rather have someone else chauffeur me around.

I wouldn’t get too comfortable being chauffeured around, as NFOs are—like Aviators—unrestricted line officers (URL Officer). Being a URL Officer allows NFOs to command flight squadrons and hold mission commander positions ?!

I have also heard you’ll find yourself more engaged than pilots are on flights, controlling both systems/flight patterns/etc. on many occasions (an actual air-mother)!

I’m about to start some shit

are officers...sailors?

i say not

what y’all think?

31073

Me: sweating profusely uhhh… 42

Can an NFO command a carrier? I find conflicting information online, some say only aviators can, some say both pilots and nfos

I think the Job is badass! Idk why people give the stigma NFO over SNA. I was more than happy to take NFO.

theoretically yes. doesn't happen a lot, but aviators, NFOs, and SWOs can now command a carrier
I didn’t know that SWOs could. That’s the main reason I wanted pilot or fo, to command one of them bad boys, don’t really mind either or, I care about being able to command at sea, not really planning to go fly commercial when and if I get out...got different stuff cooking

I hear that, I want to command a ship as well. Not sure if I’d want to fly commercial after the Navy but I do want to own a small Cessna to fly around.

Yes, NFOs can become CO of a carrier. From what I have heard, the Navy uses this position as a “stepping stone” for Aviators/NFOs in the selection/promotion process to Flag Officer (O-6 to O-7).

SWO is usually CO of cruisers/destroyers/etc., however, SWO Flag Officers may take command of carrier battle groups.

Check this out!

Y'all will appreciate this lol..

Couple weeks ago I took my fiancé on a sailing lesson-she wanted a hobby as well since I've been taking flight lessons.

We get there and the captain of the boat is super nice..older guy. We get out into Tampa Bay and I ask him what he did before sailing...guy retired as a Major General in the Air Force after flying for all 32 years of his service. Did an exchange program with the Navy after his time in Vietnam which got him 100 or so carrier landings..as an Air Force pilot. Started in Skyraiders...ended in F16's.

I about abandoned ship thinking about all the dumb shit I probably said leading up to that moment ?

around 25-30 percent of the Carrier CO's I have known of have been NFO's, but you have communities like helo's that don't have NFO's so more than likely it will skew in favor of NA's.

A carrier CO has to meet 2 requirements, be URL and be a rated aviator, so no SWO's can command a carrier. I have seen a dual pinned CO, not sure if he was SWO and lateral transferred to aviation or was aviation and was able to obtain his SWO pin on one of his other tours.
