... made me wanna run 3 miles and do pull ups on a tree banch

What the hell kind of sense does that make? Anyone else here disturbed by that? :icon_tong There are very few things that make me want to run a mile, let alone 3. Must be why I'm in the Navy.

Nice pics of the $hitter externalling an F-15. Notice the modex - EH. That's an HMM-264(REIN) CH-53E from LF6F 1-03. Went on deployment with those guys. The big deck headed to Florida, and the little decks went to Moorehead City. That's when the 53 externalled the F-15 in Florida. Still not as sexy as those Phrogs they're landing behind...

They were from HMT-302 (53 FRS) at New River. The two birds had to divert for weather on the way to Maine during a cross country.

As far as the CH-53's go, they had actually been out of production for quite a while.

Not quite, last 53's to come out of the production line are less than 2 or 3 years old, the MH-53E's are the ones that last came out of the line in 96-97.

And yes....it is the baddest non "A" helo ever built....

This is an MH-53J from USAF - superior avionics and operational capability to USMC CH-53E (totally differentr mission of course).

MH-53J is a true all weather aircraft as well...

Definitely better avi suite. As far as op capability, it depends what you're doing. I work with a lot of former Pave guys, and they love the nav capability, but all say that the J is extremely underpowered. I'll pick the USAF to snoop and poop, but if I want to carry a lot of crap to a zone, call the USMC and the CH-53E.

What is the Paves mission?

isnt it insertion of special forces (which oddly enough sounds like a soldiers euphamism for sex), para-rescue, etc

Add CSAR etc.

But the kicker with the Pave is it's a true all weather aircraft with heads down terrain avoidance features. There aren't many terrain, weather, illumination scenarios that would cause then to abort a mission wth this aircraft. But it's also very very labor intesive aircraft to fly and between the two pilots and FE, everyone is busy doing something.

Not saying the CH-53E isn't capable, it is but the Pave Low is a ighly tuned/specialized aircraft for high threat / high risk scenarios.

And by the way, they are babied - I mean immaculate looking aircraft - inside and out.

CSAR/PJ insert is definitely a tertiary mission with 53Js. The USAF 53s are SpecOps "infil/exfil" birds. The HH-60 PaveHAWKS do the CSAR, para-rescue bit. The USAF is eager to replace the 53, as it is definitely showing its age.

If you like seeing -53's fly around, come to Hawaii sometime. You can see the Marines hotdogging and show boating all over the place. I can't say I know the rules to their game, but from what I've seen it appears to be, "who can fly the lowest and not hit anything". "Anything" includes such items as buildings, cars on the freeway, the ocean...MY FREGGIN' HOUSE WHEN I'M TAKING A NAP.
