So if anyone cares, when I did my appraisals for my Officer package one of the the gentlemen I spoke with is an active duty pilot who will likely make Admiral this year (one of the officers in my chain worked for him in the past and asked him to do one of my appraisals). He was very candid about the current state of naval aviation and I will summarize what he said:
1. It is a very very good time to become a pilot. They have revamped the bonus system, meaning more money in pilot’s pockets, and the advancement-to-next-pay-grade issues of the past have been resolved.
2. Expect the Navy to push a lot of people toward the Super Hornet this year, and that includes both the EA version and the kinetic strike version.
3. The helo community has a healthy outlook and it will be very competitive to get a slot this coming up year in helo training for this reason. They simply are playing the numbers game right now and they are content with their numbers.
Just thought I would share some good info from a very high ranking Navy flyer.
