Just saw an updated packing list on OTC's website and it says to bring a weeks worth of laundry detergent...can any recent grads comment on this?

Wouldn't be a bad thing to bring, you're going to need it at some point and you may run out of clean clothes before you have time to go to the NEX.

Show up in shape. This may sound obvious, but we had people roll out on my IST who couldn’t do 42 good form pushups (for 20-24 males) or even finish a 1.5 mile run, period, let alone complete it in time. The IST minimums are now SAT-MEDIUM on the Navy’s 2016 PFA standard. To prepare: do sprint/jog runs. Do pushups and situps. Work in some HIIT to prepare for getting beat. Don’t worry about runs over 3 miles or lifting, because you’ll lose all of your base the first 9 weeks.

YES.... Failing your IST is failing your first test as an officer... In my opinion. If you fail your IST you should immediately be disenrolled and sent home.

There is no reason some individuals should fail the IST 3 times and be retained. There is no reason a prior-chief should fail her IST upon arrival (immediate AdSep IMO). Do not blame the graders. Do not blame the weather. Do not blame your mental state. Do not blame the food. It's 2 minutes of pushups and situps, followed by a 1.5 mile run. That is the easiest PFT in the military. Suck it up, complete the mission. Failure to adequately prepare for an IST is downright unacceptable.

Many IST fails were repeat offenders. You are wasting the government's money by showing up not in shape. Lastly, for you social justice warriors who want to tell me being a Naval Officer isn't only about being physically fit... My response to you is... You're right, it isn't, but setting the standard for the Navy is. You are expected to lead sailors and airmen and should therefore hold up the standard.

Can confirm that you should definitely have all your medical information ready to go. I spent the last 3 weeks of candio phase chasing down old medical docs and dealing with teeth pain from wisdom teeth removal. I was basically cleared at 5 oclock on a wednesday, got my orders 3 hours after I actually graduated the next day. I swore that I was going to have to stay in student pool.

Definitely be in shape. Senior Chief Dunlap is running the show these days, and he got a whole new list of approved workouts. No longer will burpees be done to the cadence of pushups, in and outs, starjumpers. The fitness enthusiast in me kind of wishes he could have stayed around to find out how they plan to use those 3 pullup bars near the sand pit this spring. I agree with @Igloojam , its a damn shame to see mustangs come in and completely fail the IST.... like to the point that it wasn't even funny. We had mustangs that were almost 40, and still able to pass. I had to count one candidate who didn't even get 12 pushups on their IST..... 12! I do however understand why we need a rolling system. Many of the Nukes, which are the most needed right now, tend to be the hardest hit by IST roles. The Nupoc program really needs to start looking into pre ocs fitness training programs. Maybe 3 days a week of campus PT. The problem is, less people might sign if they find out they actually have to do stuff while in school. Then they come into ocs and find out what sand tastes like.

Whoa....what's with all the body shaming going on here? This is the kinder, gentler military. You just ended 8 years of embracing diversity.

I see more fleet-wide mandatory training is in order.

How should one mentally prepare for OCS? Especially for the Marine DI's?

I'm working on a perfect PRT (trying to fine tune form right now), and I'm basically working out every minute I get. I also have most of the Big 5 memorized and I'm trying to practice saying them ballistically when I'm driving alone in the car.

Do you have any more tips? Thanks a ton guys! Feel free to call me names if I'm embarrassing myself here haha

in the words of senior chief dunlap..... reach deep down and find the man in ya! PUSH!!!!!! trust me if you are already getting near perfect PRT, and you have that stuff down you are already out pacing most of your peers. the big one I wish I had known going in was A. How to properly polish a boot and B. How to properly fold a bed with hospital corners. You learn that quick and you will be acing RLP in no time.
