And that's actually supposed to be a well-made movie. I don't have any problem at all with gay cowboys (I especially love how it makes all the sexually insecure people feel weird), but I do have a big problem with "Annapolis." From now on, any time I tell someone I went to school there, they will automatically assume that I went through an experience similar to whatever they portray in the movie. It will take two hours of argument to convince them they're wrong.

As an example of the common man's ignorance, a friend of mine told a guy that she was flying C-130s (which was true). His response, "I don't think the Navy has C-130s...are you sure?" No, you dumbass, she was mistaken about what she does for a f*cking living. Whoops.

People will hold on to the most retarded beliefs EVEN WITHOUT reinforcement from Hollywood. As soon as they make a movie about something, it takes about 12,000 calories of effort from your brain and your vocal chords to change someone's opinion - even though you were there. I'm sure SEALs don't even bother to explain how inaccurate THEIR movie was; at least it was somewhat positive.

As I said before, I'm hoping this damn movie at least puts things in a positive light even though it will be inaccurate.

By the way, if you attend this movie in uniform and I find out...I've got thirty rounds of 5.56mm with your name on them.

Yeah I'm sure it's going to be innacurate. As gay as you guys say it will be, and I'm sure it will be, I also hopes it sheds a positive light on the Academy. Part of the reason I will see it is so that I can tell people what it's really like as opposed to the movie. Whatever, I'm just going to go in and view it as entertainment, not a documentary.

Either way, you're absolutely right, it will take some convincing to tell people what is/what isn't portrayed right in the movie.

P.S. I'd never ever see it in uniform. Anyone who does is a tool.

Which part, the uniform part or the PAO part? If it is legit (there's no NAVADMIN covering the subject), it's completely outrageous. Only a pinhead would think of something like this. It's as if the NY Times is going to unveil a grainy picture of some E-1 viewing the film in his crackerjacks at Rumsfeld's next press briefing and exclaim, "Ahhh Haaaa!!! The Navy does endorse this film, isn't that true, Mr. Secretary! Looks like we've caught you in your own web of lies, Mr. Secretary!" Give me a break. :sleep_125

Both. It was also sent out in an email, but I deleted it due to NMCI telling me my mailbox was over the limit. My best guess they made a point about this is in case there's a screening where free admission is offered to service members in uniform. You know somebody's gonna take 'em up on that offer. We don't have to worry about that here at China Lake, as there is but one theatre with 7 screens...although it is stadium seating, and only 6 bucks for military. Plus, it's where all the high school girls hang out.

Who knows?

"Top Gun" showed an F-14 RIO's job to be one of sitting in the rear cockpit, holding on to the bar, watching the enemy on their six, and screaming in fear as the pilot cooly did all the work and fired all the weapons. The movie spiked applications to join naval air. "An Officer and a Gentleman" also spiked Navy recruiting.

As ThisGuy has said, I was referring to both, right or wrong, stupid or inane.

I've never been to the naval academy but I'm going to go to the movie and tell all my friends it was an absolutely correct portrayal because I know they're likely to believe me since I work with Navy guys. I kind of like the idea of taking a little pot shot at the academy. Marine academy grads are always just a little too proud of graduating from there. It makes me suspicious.

Since they can't watch it in uniform, I guess the junior enlisted-types in their A-Schools (who have to wear their uniforms everywhere) will have to go watch BareBack Mountain instead.

Anyone ever been to the Hooters in North Charleston or Pensacola on a Friday night? It's like friggin' Fleet Week!

Edit: I have not seen the commercials, but the one I heard on the radio the other day made me cringe and I have never even been in NROTC or on one of the academy's campus.

This is the gouge we were given

Below is guidance from CHINFO and NETC about the upcoming film, "ANNAPOLIS" set for release on January 27, 2006. Specifics include:

The film is not supported by DoD or DoN
Media requests regarding this film will not be supported
Any military attending a screening or promotional activity for the film should not attend in uniform If collateral duty PAO is asked by news media for interviews, refer them to both me and BUMED PAO

The attached information provides additional background. As with other public affairs guidance, this message is for internal audiences only.

Thank you,

XXXXX

Team PA,

Below is the official guidance regarding any queries regarding the movie "ANNAPOLIS". In the past, several training commands were approached to provide uniformed personnel at movie theaters for the showing of films about Navy life, or for news media interviews about the movie. The below guidance is very specific - The Navy will not support these requests. If a collateral duty PAO is asked by news media for interviews, please refer them to your echelon III PAO.

In some instances, the command leadership (CO/XO/CMC or other senior personnel) may be contacted directly by the theater or media. Please ensure you brief your command leadership on this guidance.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Public Affairs Team:

On January 27, 2006, Buena Vista Pictures (a division of the Disney Studios) will release "ANNAPOLIS," a feature film that purports to be about life at the Naval Academy. This picture was made without the support of the Department of the Navy (DoN) and the Department of Defense (DoD).

Various Navy offices have been approached by Disney and their publicity affiliates to participate in screenings and promotional activities. Our policy is that we do not participate in promotional events for motion pictures which we declined to provide filming support.

CHINFO was initially approached through NAVINFO WEST for assistance with this production. In preparation of the script, the producers were given several research opportunities at the Naval Academy and were allowed to film the "I Day" induction of the Plebe Class. When the script was presented for support, it was reviewed by NAVINFO WEST and the Naval Academy. Extensive notes were provided to the producers - who provided additional drafts of the script to the Navy. Unfortunately, the story depicted in the script did not accurately portray the Academy, its standards for training, and its methods of shaping midshipmen mentally, morally and physically for service in the U.S. Navy. Based on this, the producers were not allowed access to the Academy grounds or provided with any other support for the filming.

Navy personnel should avoid the appearance of support to the film as members of the Department of the Navy. Anyone attending a screening or promotional activity for the film should not attend in uniform. Recruiters who are asked to set up booths in theater lobbies where the movie is playing should contact the Recruiting Command PAO.

Queries about the film should be referred to CHINFO or NAVINFO WEST. Brief guidance in response to query is provided below:

Q1 - Did the Navy support the making of the film "ANNAPOLIS?"
A1 - No. Some research opportunities were provided for the producers, but no actual support for the filming was provided.

Q2 - Why didn't the Navy support the film?
A2 -- The script did not accurately portray the Naval Academy and its training procedures.

Q3 - In what way is it inaccurate?
A3 -- It is our general policy not to discuss specifics of any project that is turned down for support.

Q4 - There was filming of "I-Day" at the Academy. Wasn't this support for the production?
A4 -- The Academy allowed the Producers to film "I-Day" because the opportunity to shoot that footage would only happen once a year. Permission was given on the grounds that the footage could only be used if the production received DoN and DoD support. Since the production did not receive support, that footage could not be used in the picture.

Q5 -- Disney filmed the movie in Philadelphia. Why?
A5 -- Please contact Buena Vista Pictures for any information on this.

Q6 -- Why aren't Navy people allowed to participate in promotional activities for the movie?
A6 -- It is our general policy not to provide promotional support for motion pictures were not supported by the DoN or DoD.

Hmmm...that's not a bad reason. I guess I'll see it when it comes out on DVD and I have nothing better to do.

What is it the nukes say? "It's not gay if you're underway"?

Since I'm no good at just "holding onto the bar and screaming in fear" I had to become a pilot. :icon_wink

Anyway, I predict this movie will slightly elevate the status of Academy grads in the eyes of ignorant civilians (many people don't even know what the service academies are), but to our fellow comrades-in-arms, we'll just look like even bigger tools.

You know the main reason why this movie is gonna suck? This dude said it:

I saw the preview once online, its just a training school...where's the conflict/climax of it? Boring.

Exactly. They had to invent some stupid conflict and make it 10,000 times more dramatic than it really is. A good writer/director combo could make a decent movie about USNA if it was a low-intensity, character-driven story. You know, something like "Antwone Fisher." But the makers of "Annapolis" wanted a big-budget, high-speed action movie. Huge mistake.
