My husband is at OCS right now and I have not heard from him yet so I'm wondering when the first time they are allowed to call home might be. I would also like to know a little about what he is going through and if anyone has suggestions for me about what to send him and also about times i might be allowed to see him.

soo. I don't know how OCS in Rhode Island is, but my roommates and I socked our cell-phones and brought them in on a POV run AFTER RLP. Pretty much had no interference in our home after that...as long as it was in yer seabag and the seabag was padlocked, and it was OFF when not in yer hand, no reason it couldn't be used for a phone call after taps.

you gotta be real careful with that one and it depends on the DI and the roommates (if they are complete retards they will just get you in trouble)

If that isn't an option we made a POV run at least once a week and guys could call from their cells then. Plus Sundays and all the letters you can write. That mail was a freaking life saver in OCS and Boot Camp. It definitely brought up yer spirits at the end of a long day.

My wife lived in Jacksonville, FL when I was in OCS and she made the 5 hour drive about every third weekend to see me at the chapel and on liberty (after like week 6)

It was awesome.
This should give you an idea of what it is like.

Just an idea

PS congrats on yer husband making OCS. He'll be a changed man for the better when he gets out!

I didn't make my first phone call until a WEEK into OCS (my second sunday there), so don't feel bad if he hasn't called you yet. He is probably hating life right now and is missing you a LOT.

As for knowing what he is going through... this site is pretty old (2001?) but it was fairly accurate for me when I went through OCS in pcola last year and I'm sure it's very similar to OCS now in RI. Main differences, is that a couple classes are different, there is no week 8 MTT, just the week 3 (week 4 now?) RLP and there is now Chow hall procedures in RI (although I hear they are working on getting it back).

Hopefully this helps. Hang in there. Write him lots of letters and be by the phone when he has access to one!

They are a bit more strict on cell phones now. Obviously its largely dependent on your DI, but when I was there that could be an offense that would get you sea walled. Other DI's brought their OC's cookies and milk before they went to bed and sent them out drinking soon after arrival... *cough, Gunny J, cough...

@Mcmurray: I wouldn't worry too much about him not calling yet. Thats normal. Unfortunately if he didn't call before heading in on Sunday morning, then he won't get another chance till the next Sunday. I would be prepared to only get about one call a week, sometimes less, until closer to the end of OCS.

I think Hi-moms is the dinner you heard about, and yes as previously said its the night before graduation. Its a good time. IF they get a dinning out there will be that too, but those are usually only once a quarter and you can't go if you are the junior most class.

@Skim: You mean to tell me the entire time we were living in the same room you had naughty pictures and I never saw a single one! Backstabbing SWOs...

what percent of RL officers get jets?
if anyone else (that's male) asked about what he's going through at OCS, the first person to reply to the OP would be "use the search function!"

just because the OP is a female member, have we all transformed into a gentlemen? we're lame.

P.S. use the search funtion. :D

I didn't have pictures. I would have been too paranoid for that. You know me, however I did calm down a bit once I became institutionalized. Just a bit though...

Shot, You're an Officer now and therefore a gentleman

skim - damn, is that how it works? :D

Original poster - if you ever get a call from him, make sure you listen to every rant he has to say and continue to be encouraging. one time, I took my ONE fone call I had on sunday afternoon to call this girl that i was seeing and she got upset with me and started crying complaining that i was always talking about what's going on at OCS and that I didn't ask enough questions about how she was doing in fashion design school. yea, i stopped calling her after that. :icon_wink

How insensitive. I was considering quitting college to go to fashion school, but OCS looks a lot less demanding so I'm trying to go that route.

No reason to "act" like gentlemen just for me. I've been with my military husband for eight years and his dad was a fighter pilot for the whole twenty years. Thanks for all the feedback. Is there anything that i can send to him that would make him feel better? I've heard that it may not be such a good idea to send pictures. And, when did you start getting liberty at OCS?
Also, anyone know anything about NFO training?

Yeah, you can show up and surprise him one Sunday morning at the chapel. Even if it is only for a few hours, it will make his day, week, and month like nothing you've seen in a while. And if you do that later on into OCS, say week 7 or later, you may get to spend Sat afternoon and Sunday with him. But be prepared, cause he's going to be in much better shape than when he left and you'll need to keep up with what he's dishing out....;)

although... couple months of complete abstenance might make him a very very strong...minute man. :D

I personally hated getting letters. I didn't want to think of what was going on the "outside"... Maybe it was just me. It just sucked when I was IP'ing and ironing my underwear on a Friday night and I imagined what everyone else was doing with their time. I actually didn't collect alot of my mail. Once again that's just me and you know your husband alot better than anyone on here.

As far as liberty goes that is going to be entirely dependend on his DI. A couple give it early and a couple don't give it until candio phase (the last 3 weeks)... When he calls and you know who his DI is you could probably PM an OCS grad on here and get a rough idea of when he will start getting liberty.

Hi. My husband is in his 4th week at OCS. The first week is very difficult for them, and I know it is for you as well. Just try to be strong for him and put yourself aside. He really needs your support right now. Your SO will find out about Dining Out a few weeks before it occurs. My husbands is in a few weeks from now and he just found out last week. There is a private spouses forum on Airwarriors that has a lot of info if you are interested. Good luck.
