Anyone else here jumping at the sound of their phones? I think I know what it feels like to be a 16 year old girl waiting for a call/text!

I changed the ringtone for my OR and processor to stop this from happening. It was starting to get annoying :p

I have know several fellow OR's that held that type of schedule, they were the ones that we not successfull.

What rank is your OR?

My OR is a Senior Chief. He's my third OR in about a 2 year time frame. And I mean no disrespect when I say this, but I've found that the higher ranking my OR has been, the more difficult he has been to work with/contact. My first OR was a LTJG. We worked together for about a month before I was transferred and had little to no contact until he called me to cancel my ASTB date and send me off to someone else. My second was a PO1, and he was awesome. Senior Chief is growing on me, but I feel like I have to really stay on top of him to make the process work. But after a year of working together, he knows I'm serious about this. Overall, I feel as though I've been self-recruiting. It's as if my ORs have only been there as a formality. Regardless, I'm feeling surprisingly confident this time around.

When my OR first spoke to me about January, he asked me if it was ok, I told him 1/6 would be extremely hard, and 1/27 would be fine. He said "I'll call Chief so-and-so to let him know." The tone of our conversation was much more "can we disregard your original date?" not "we're doing this." So I do feel like I was asked, albeit not in writing.

Does this match up to everyone else's experience?

My recruiter simply mentioned the possibility. My avail. to ship date on my packet is 01 OCT 2012, so perhaps that's why he didn't actually ASK me if it was ok. After receiving that news without really talking to him about it, I'm having reservations about potentially reporting to Newport so soon. BUT this IS what I signed up for, and I know I'd be crazy not to take it if it was offered to me. Breaking the news to my employer that I'd be leaving sooner than I told him should be interesting...

I have had only one recruiter he is a chief and he is hit or miss. Sometimes hes on top of things other times I have to call the recruiting Station to get in touch with him. I also am not looking forward to telling my employer.... one of two things will happen.... he'll cuss me out and then fire me on the spot or cuss me out and let me stay there till I actually ship out. Either way I am sure to get chewed out.

My experience has been the reverse. The first two ORs I worked with were Enlisted guys who tried to push me away because of circumstances that make my application more difficult to complete than others (besides low GPA). The OR who helped me out is an LT and he insisted I call him even outside of work hours and weekends if I needed help with docs and forms. I get regular updates regarding the progress of my application - he initiates the call.

Maybe he's an exception to the rule, but he worked hard to get me done on time when the others didn't think I stood a chance.

My experience with my OR has been exactly this. I had to show him that I have other resources to really get him to even talk to me in the beginning. But we've made progress as far as our interaction is concerned. Luckily, my has a cell phone specifically for the job; I've reached him just after he finished dinner at home.

My employer knows what I'm involved with here. I've been working for him for almost a year, but just started last week as full time for tax season (he's an accountant). When we agreed on full time terms, my OR's most recent estimate on shipping out for me was end of FY13 or beginnig of FY14. Ideally, I could leave the end of April, but I won't turn down Januray or February if that's what they give me. The way I look at it is, if he fires me, at least I'll know I have OCS in the near future. I'm lucky to not have many financial obligations; I would work part time at McDonald's if need be until I ship (NOT the ideal plan though...)

This is exactly how my PO1 recruiter was. He seemed genuinely dedidated to his job as a recruiter. My willingness to perservere through all of the other "crap" I've been through with this process is definitely because of my experience with him. Other than that, the "crap" just builds character. ;)

For those of you worried about employers reactions to leaving earlier than you thought: remember that you'll have orders along with your FS letter. "Hey, I've been ordered to go" sounds a lot better than "Hey, so I said I was going to leave later, but I'm leaving now instead."

I'm in a weird boat myself. To sign on another semester or not is my issue. It is more of a when I know that I'm going than when I'm actually going.

Yep orders make it hard to argue.

My designator is NFO, not pilot so I'm not worried about being pushed up to January. Does anyone know if you can ask for your OCS date to be moved up, as in a later date? My available date is January 1st.

In general E-7 and below only go to enlisted recruiting school, which essentially teached you to hold a persons hand, some E-7 and above and then O-1 and above go to officer recruiting school which tells you the requirements which you can and can not turn someone away but says the person needs to be proactive, don't hold their hand.

PO1 and below are the bottom of the OR food chain so while they may be attentive to you trying to push your case is hard for them.

Ideally you get a CPO or officer that isn't on the ROAD program or believes what they do as an OR will benefit them.

Something that may shed some light, in enlisted recruiting school you are told if you don't like someone you can turn them away, no issues so if you go to join enlisted the recruiter can look at you and say, nope, don't like you not putting you in. A person that goes to apply to be an officer can not be turned away if they meet the minimum requirements, to do so can result in the OR having negative things happen.

We both are in the same boat. With schools shutting down early for the holiday season coupled with the fact that we might get a Pro-Rec on Friday...I will be filing my Leave of Absence probably a few days before the start of the new semester. Not the most ideal situation (i.e. coming back to withdraw and cleaning out my apartment) but then again...gotta learn to be flexible with military life.

And I guess a Pro-Rec is the start of that...in its own way.

Yeah, but in my time as a military brat we had more warning, or at least knew that a tour was going to be up around a certain time and just needed to know where we were going, and not so much when. I never remember being like "next month or in sixth months and god knows when we will find out." Deployments, on the other hand, sometimes came with really short notice.

EDIT: Our mileage may vary, I wasn't a navy brat.

So I went to the navy selection board schedule for 2014 and the board is set to meet on DEC 10, this is information that was updated on the 4th or so the website says?

It says "Active O-7 line (URL/Intel/a bunch of other designators)" - I think that might be referring to promotions to Rear Admiral within the same communities as our board. The entire list has a lot of stuff that looks to have nothing to do with OCS accessions.

Here's a question: Are background checks performed on candidates before they are selected?
