I have just signed on to go to plc camp this summer and I had a friend that was thinking about doing it too, but he has asthma. Is that going to be a big problem for him and if it is should he lie about. Just something I wanted to know so i could get back to him figured this was the best place to ask. thanks.

It will be a huge problem because 1)They won't let asthmatics in the Marine Corps 2)a healthy person sucks it up hard enough, I can't imagine someone that has trouble breathing trying to do it. My suggestion would be for him to not try to lie about it, if he slips thruogh it could possibly lead to him getting hurt. Plus the first day the Sgt. Instructors and Corpsmen search everything you bring. Therefore, if he were to have an inhaler or some other type of medicine with him it will come under question immediatly.

Yeah, I agree with TXAGO4. The won't even let you in the airforce with athsma. We had a guy actually die in basic training because he lied about it, and then his parents didn't even recieve the life insurance because he lied.

thanks guys i just feel bad for the guy because he has always succeeded even with asthma. like in high school was one of our best football players and could physically could compete with anyone and had a 1290 on his sat's so hes not dumb and now they are going to reject him do the fact that he has asthma and has to take a puff of something. i know we cant change the rules but that just seems awfully stupid to turn down someone without giving him a chance. are you sure there are no ways around it.

Nope, definitely no ways around it. You gotta remember, the whole purpose behind the military is the mission, not directly about catering to military member. What if he has an athsma attack in the line of duty and causes himself and other to become injured/hurt. It sounds crappy, but it's not about giving people chances it's about getting it done. Sorry about your friend.

I remember reading in Black Hawk Down that one of the Rangers was an asthmatic...they let him stay b/c he was so motivated. Wouldn't count on it based on that one example though.

the thing is that he has never ever failed. i have played with him since we were in second grade and he has never missed a game of football basketball or baseball he probably is the most dependable guy i know. i know i am bitching about a lost cause i guess will have to get over it. just the military has lost a guy that could've been great.

Did your friend have asthma as a child or does he still have occaisonal trouble? That would make a big differnce in his eligibility.

Well first off its not like he takes his inhaler 24/7 and taking your inhaler is not a long process. you guys are making it out to be like he has to take a long time out to get his medications. I honestly havent seen him take it in forever. For all i know he takes a pill in the morning and thats all. He runs with me everyday so i dont see the problem.

The issue:

We do not lie, cheat nor steal, nor do we tolerate any amongst us that do.

We must tell the MO the facts and let those chips fall where they may.

you can buy those inhalers for pretty cheap in the desert. no prescription needed. seriously, though, IS he an asthmatic or WAS he an asthmatic. makes a difference i think.

Okay, I am just giving my 2 cents because I am active duty military. I know of a few people who managed to squeeze through the cracks and get through basic training completely fine. One guy I know who was stationed here with me just got a Dishonorable, not medical, discharge, for not mentioning he had asthma diagnosed as a child. He didn't even have an asthma attack, but he got pneumonia up here and went to the hospital where they found out he had it prior to entering the service..Just fair warning, not trying to be pessimistic..just realistic.
