Listening to subtle sidebands of this thread brings to mind an interesting book; "Riding Rockets" by Mike Mullane. Mullane was a former AF WSO and was mission specialist on three shuttle missions. A rather "Kiss and Tell" book, a primary theme was the presence of a a very Pro-Navy bias within the Shuttle Program, including the Program Director and the Chief of Astronaughts, both former Naval Aviators. He links the two shuttle disasters to that Navy bias, not directly, contributory.
Freudian slip Chief?
As for a Naval Avaior bias, I had a former Space Shuttle simulator instructor in my RAG class (long story) and he said that Naval Aviators were pretty dominate in the astronaut corps. When he was thinking about becoming an Astronaut even some of the AF guys told him t go Navy (apparently a little bit more competitive and 'selective' in the AF, forthe right guys and gals). Being a Flight Surgeon doesn't hurt either, there are more than a few of them in the astronaut corps.
BTW:
The first US man in space was a Naval Aviator
The first US man to orbt the earth was a Naval Aviator (Marine)
The first man on the moon was a former Naval Aviator
And this last Shuttle crew had 6 astronauts on the crew. One Canadian, one US Navy Diving officer, one former Naval Aviator and three active duty ones (one Coast Guard). I wonder if the AF has had a similar crew.......
