I remember reading something in Faith of My Fathers about John McCain Sr. wearing a green "cap" with an officer's insignia on it as a combat superstition.

Is this the one?
Likely is. I imagine the many manufacturers of HBT considered “khaki” in the broadest sense of the word.
No...THIS is Admiral "Slew" McCain's famous "combat hat"...looks like an 8-point HBT cover top sewn on to a regular combination cover frame:

Also, there are rumors that someone who matched my description may have been seen wearing a leather jacket (with patches!) in lieu of the SDB jacket while standing Sea and Anchor on the way in to Sydney.

Frankly, if you can wear the black Ike jacket sans SDB coat, you should be able to wear leathers that way, too. We're the one service with some of the most unique uniforms and yet all the top brass wants to do is shit all over our special uniform traditions. Very sad.

So many people shitting on ball caps. I guess no one told the Duke that they weren't cool. ;)

Shamelessly taken from the film They Were Expendable (probably one of the finest films about patrol boat Sailors):

Dumb question: I read the whole thread, but I still don't understand the dip vs. no dip in the garrison cover. Are there photo examples?

Salty dip in keeping with the finest traditions of the Naval Service:

No dip (Poor Doc, there's no one there to sort him out):

And if you forget how to pull it off, refer to the uniform manual. Notice the salt freely flowing from the PT Boat skipper (back when SWOs were fun):

And if the airdales amongst us forgot how to dress properly for flight duties, see the quick reference guide below (Once again, notice the salt residue on even the ensigns amongst the group):

Thanks. Great photos. That holster and web belt on the PT boat skipper look familiar...

I was never a fan of the double-dip, though. That just never looked as sharp. I think it happened more with the non-CNT hats.
