I'm betting it will actually be a pretty good story! They’ll probably get a two hour panel to talk about it at the next USAF equivalent of Tailhook, whatever that is.

It's still coming down fast enough to smash whatever is dangling below it. Watch how fast the balloon falls in the video.Looks like the AIM 9 hit the payload. Why use a IR missle that likely blew the payload to hell? Why not shoot up the envelope with BBs and let it drift down more gently?
Beat me to itSo does a balloon silhouette get painted on the fighter that shot this down?
Beat me to it
They should have aimed big sky penis at it
Well the envelope was completely collapsed. I was thinking a couple gun shots would only allow the gas to exit out those holes or tears making the decent much slower. Luke's kills went up in fire thanks to hydrogen. No worry here. It's still coming down fast enough to smash whatever is dangling below it. Watch how fast the balloon falls in the video.
I suspect that being that precise with guns, at 58K, with a 2-3K Ft altitude difference would have been really tough. I imagine that weapons selection for this engagement was well thought out based on the desired outcome.Well the envelope was completely collapsed. Source?Apparently, it was an AIM-9X without a warhead.
