Looks like the AIM 9 hit the payload. Why use a IR missle that likely blew the payload to hell? Why not shoot up the envelope with BBs and let it drift down more gently?

It's still coming down fast enough to smash whatever is dangling below it. Watch how fast the balloon falls in the video.

Well the envelope was completely collapsed. I was thinking a couple gun shots would only allow the gas to exit out those holes or tears making the decent much slower. Luke's kills went up in fire thanks to hydrogen. No worry here.

I suspect that being that precise with guns, at 58K, with a 2-3K Ft altitude difference would have been really tough. I imagine that weapons selection for this engagement was well thought out based on the desired outcome.
